Report on Inaugural Session of Training and Capacity Building Program Frontline Staff and Stakeholders in Snow Leopard Landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir, India

Objective: The inaugural session of the Training and Capacity Building Program Frontline Staff and Stakeholders in Snow Leopard Landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir, India aimed to create awareness and build capacity among participants regarding the conservation and protection of this endangered species.
Participants:
The inaugural session was attended by students from various degree colleges- Sri Pratap College, GDC, Bemina and Islamia College of Science and Commerce. Twenty-One (21) students from the Department of Zoology and Design Your Degree program from ICSC attended the programme. Their presence demonstrated a keen interest in wildlife conservation and a commitment to learning about the specific challenges facing snow leopards.
The programme was graced by various dignitaries from the department of Wildlife - Wildlife Warden Central Division Sh. Parveez Ahmad Wani, Wildlife Warden North Division Sh. Intesar Suhail, DFO Sindh Division Sh. Danish Khan, DFO Bandipora Sh. Waseem Farooq Mir, DFO Anantnag Sh. Mudasir Mehmood Malik
Opening Remarks: The session began with a warm welcome from Sh. Pradeep Chandra Wahule, IFS and Regional Wildlife Warden, Kashmir, who emphasized the importance of preserving biodiversity and highlighted the significance of snow leopards in the ecosystem. He underscored the need for collaborative efforts to ensure the survival of this majestic species.
Keynote Address: Following the opening remarks, the keynote address was delivered by Dr Munib who spoke at length about his work on the Mapping the Habitat of this illusive carnivore. He provided an overview of the current status of snow leopards in the Kashmir Valley. He highlighted the challenges Snow Leopard faces due to habitat loss, poaching, and climate change. The address emphasized the urgent need for conservation strategies tailored to the unique habitat and behavior of snow leopards.
An Interim Report of his work was also released on the occasion.
Training Sessions: The training sessions were structured to cover various aspects related to snow leopard conservation:
Ecology and Behavior: Participants gained insights into the habitat requirements, feeding habits, and behavior of snow leopards.
Threats and Challenges: A session focused on the primary threats to snow leopards, including human-wildlife conflict and illegal wildlife trade.
Conservation Strategies: Experts shared successful conservation initiatives and discussed strategies to mitigate threats and promote coexistence.
Interactive Discussions: Throughout the session, interactive discussions were encouraged, allowing participants to ask questions and share their experiences and insights. This exchange of ideas fostered a collaborative learning environment and encouraged participants to brainstorm practical solutions to conservation challenges.
Post lunch the students were allowed to take a nature walk with the Dachigam National Park. The students visited Trout farm of the park and also the Rescue and Rehabilitation centre of the captured wild animals. Dr. Mehreen and Dr Tahir Gazanfar gave the students insights about the local flora and fauna of the national park.
Conclusion: The inaugural session of the training program on snow leopards concluded on a high note, with participants expressing enthusiasm and commitment to apply their newfound knowledge in their respective fields. The event served as a critical step towards building a network of informed and dedicated individuals working towards the conservation of snow leopards.
