Five Day Workshop on “Engaging students for Wetland Conservation - Khushalsar and Gilsar” concludes at Islamia College of Science and Commerce.
The valedictory function of the 5-day workshop titled “Engaging Students for Wetland Conservation – Khushalsar & Gilsar Lakes” was held in and outside the campus with the take away that there is urgent need for actively engaging students as important stakeholders in the restoration process. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, experts, and environmentalists alike. The event was graced by Prof. (Dr.) Tehmina Yousuf, Principal of the College who appreciated the collaborative efforts of facilitators, students and the college for organizing such a meaningful workshop. Principal of the College Prof. Tehmina Yousuf commended the Department of Zoology for continued focus on sustainability and environmental awareness. She assured that the momentum gained during the workshop will be carried forward on taking the momentum forward Mr. Rafi Ahmad Baht, Regional Director, DEERS Department of Ecology Environment and Remote Sensing highlighted the critical role of student engagement in environmental conservation and underlined the importance of workshops in developing a deeper understanding of wetland ecosystems among youth, who are the ambassadors of our society.Twenty-two students from different streams of the College participated in the workshop. Certificates were awarded to all participants in recognition of their commitment for the cause. The main feature of the valediction was a photo-essay exhibition showcasing the students’ creative and informative work conducted in the Zoology Lawns. The exhibition aimed to carry forward the dialogue and engage the public to raise awareness about the conservation challenges faced by Khushalsar and Gilsar Lakes. The technical sessions were conducted by distinguished trainers, including Mr. Kh Samuel Poumai, Senior Manager Services - Project Delivery & PMU at STS Global. Mr. Poumai, was the master trainer, provided valuable insights into sustainable practices for wetland conservation. Alongside him, Mr. Jalal Ud Din Baba, a Science Filmmaker and Earth Journalist, conducted sessions that explored the intersection of media and environmental advocacy. The valedictory function was attended by the distinguished eminent environmentalists and conservationists, including Advocate Nadeem Qadri, Ms. Nazir Benazir (Senior Environmentalist), and Mr. Mansoor Wangnoo, who praised the students for their keen interest and active involvement in the conservation of the Khushalsar and Gilsar Lakes. Their words of encouragement underscored the importance of collective efforts to protect the region’s vital natural resources. The workshop has successfully created a platform for students to actively participate in the conservation movement of these two wetlands in the vicinity of college besides inculcating the values of among students and become environmental stewards.
