The extended essay is a required component of the International Baccalaureate Programme, and is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 3,800-4,000 word paper. It is a two-year project where students will investigate a topic of personal interest to them, which relates to one of the student's six DP subjects. Students will develop their skills in formulating a research question, engage in a personal exploration of the topic, communicate ideas, and develop an argument. Participation in this process develops the capacity to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate knowledge. (IBO, Extended Essay)
