CELEBRATIONS

Congratulations Lucia!

Lucia, a third-grade student, took part in an International Music Festival in Bursa last weekend. Because of her performance, she was invited to two major piano competitions, one in Turkey and one in Stockholm, Sweden. She qualified to the finals without having to compete.

Well done, Lucia! We are proud of you!

PYP Reports will be published next week on Friday, February 2nd, accessed through Managebac. Please join us virtually next week so that we can walk you through reports at IICS!

In Grade 5, we want to inspire our students to become action-takers, people who make a positive impact on their community.

We are therefore hoping to provide the students with opportunities to engage with action-takers. This could be in the form of:

Anything that might inspire our children to take action would contribute to our overarching goals.

We are looking for any contact or connection that you might provide. It could be small or large scale, local or global; even small actions can make a big difference. Please fill out this form, if you would like to help.

News from the Food Committee

It's flu season again, and we are all striving to stay healthy or recover quickly if unlucky. We already know that sleeping enough, staying active, and spending enough time outdoors regardless of the weather might help. But what can we do, food-wise?  Current studies show no sufficient evidence that any single food or supplement can ‘boost’ immunity; however, there are several food-related factors to pay attention to. Here are some simple tips:

1. Get nutrient-rich: Include at least 4 portions of fruits and veggies a day and try to follow the “rainbow rule” to receive all the spectrum of vitamins and minerals.

Most important here would be beta-carotene (carrot, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, etc.) and vitamin C-rich foods (like bell peppers, broccoli, and tomatoes). Despite the fact that vitamin C cannot prevent contamination, studies show that obtaining enough vitamin C shortens the duration of illness.

 2. Probiotics are extremely important for our immune system, so don’t forget to include fermented products in your diet, like pickles, yogurt, kefir, kimchee, etc.

 3. Always prefer foods to supplements: foods not only contain crucial fiber but also illuminate the risk of excessive and harmful nutrient intake that supplements can cause.

Keeping your diet balanced and stable throughout the year is the best way to improve your immune system. We will talk more about the principles of a balanced diet next time.
