PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION
Our first tour of 2024 begins with a unique opportunity to enjoy an Istanbul classic, an afternoon tea, in a perfect setting - the Pera Palace. Specially organized for IICS parents in the morning hours so we can spend this special time together while the children are at school!
Vicky Lyoo: an IICS parent, a former Elle Korea Fashion Director, and International Social Etiquette Consultant, will share some of her insights on tea etiquette while enjoying the atmosphere and elegance in this historical Istanbul landmark. Vicky will also share her thoughts on jewelry styling tips with her very own jewelry brand Çok Çok Istanbul. And you’ll be able to purchase jewelry items as well!
Start time: 11 am
Duration: 2.5 hrs

Eggplant: Friend or Foe?
In the 13th century, it was believed that eating eggplants causes insanity, and while good old myths get exposed, the new ones come up and go viral. It’s time for them to also get debunked.
Is nicotinic acid in eggplants safe? Yes, nicotinic acid (or niacin, or vitamin B3) like all the vitamins is essential for our body's proper functioning.
Is solanine in eggplants safe?
It is true that eating too much solanine can make you feel bad, however, you really need to try hard to get the poisonous dose out of an eggplant. Eating daily 5-7 eggplants for a child and more than 10 for an adult is hardly feasible.
Is lectin in eggplants safe?
Lectin is a naturally occurring protein that is found in most plants (beans, peanuts, lentils, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, fruits, wheat, and other grains). Some research seems to indicate that taking in excessive quantities of raw lectins could have negative health effects.
In reality, the amount you’d need to consume each day to reach the harmful level is unachievable. Moreover, studies have shown that lectins break down when cooked, therefore the risk of adverse health effects arising from a cooked eggplant is insignificant and is not cause for concern.
To sum up, the health benefits you receive from including eggplants in your diet (fiber, antioxidants, many vitamins and minerals like vitamins B3, B6, C and K, and magnesium, potassium, folic acid, etc.) by far outweigh any perceived benefits from avoiding them. So don’t hesitate; come and try our delicious eggplant suggestions and let it contribute to your rainbow of nutrients.”
Yours,
Food Committee
