RSE

Relationships and Sexuality Education

We need to help all of our young people to excel in all aspects of life, so they grow into adults who are healthy, confident individuals. RSE education should encourage and support young people to respect themselves and others, to value diversity, and give them the ability to build healthy, respectful relationships. The new curriculum starting in September 2022 will include developmentally appropriate Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE).

Young people should have the right to access information that keeps them safe from harm. This includes learning about healthy relationships (friendships, family etc), keeping safe, online and offline, and being confident to raise issues with responsible adults. RSE is designed to safeguard all our children and young people, supporting them to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours that will assist in protecting them throughout their lives. This is critical to building a society which treats others with understanding and empathy, whatever their ethnicity, social economic background, disability, sex, gender or sexuality.

Topics like online safety, consent and sexual health are all included in the Code, but at developmentally appropriate phases so learners aren’t exposed to things that aren’t appropriate to their age and development. At a younger age, for example, they will be taught about treating each other with kindness and empathy. As children grow older, they will gain an understanding of topics such as online safety, personal hygiene etc – all of which will be handled in a sensitive, age and developmentally appropriate way.

Up until the end of our learners time in Aberdare Park Primary, they would have learnt about the following;

Please click on the link below to view the government mandatory RSE code.

It is important to note that when viewing the RSE code above you will see the topics of learning broken down into two phases which will affect our learners here at Aberdare Park Primary. One section is from age 3 and the other from age 7. However, the topics and learning intentions will be delivered in a sensitive and age appropriate manner.  Only certain and necessary elements from phase 3 (from 11 years old) will be delivered to our learners in year 6 e.g effective communication, positive relationships in context of family and friendships, personal health and hygiene.  Not all learning intentions will be taught at primary level. The more explicit topics in phase 3 (from 11 years old) will be taught in secondary school. We want RSE education to empower and help our children to develop as healthy, confident individuals, ready for the next chapter in their life after primary school. We hope that this information is useful to you and we thank you for your continued support. We are happy to discuss further if you have any questions or queries.
