How can the Arts Influence Us?
Concepts: Belonging, Communication, Expression, Creativity
An inquiry into:
Developing their own creative talents, artistic skills and performance skills;
Communicating ideas by thinking creatively and engaging with their imagination and senses;
Identifying a sense of identity and belonging through their experiences and relaying this through the arts;
Exploring and experiencing performance and understand how it can provoke emotion and develop confidence.
Learners will use digital technologies creatively to communicate, find and present information. This will prepare pupils with ICT skills for the future world and help build a body of knowledge of algorithms and how these can help us in daily life.
Learners will think of creative ways to share their findings with the wider community. This will help develop communication skills across a range of audiences, building confidence and resilience. Pupils will collaborate with others on projects, problem solving to reach a shared goal.
Learners are knowledgeable about their world around them and are beginning to use evidence when forming their views. Pupils will explore how Science effects the natural world around them and ways in which we can help the world become a more sustainable place to be.
Learners will build their mental and emotional well being by developing confidence and resilience through planned activities. This will help pupils to understand and exercise their rights in order to gain a sense of self and belonging (Cynefin) within their local community.
This is yet another important year for our pupils in Year 5/6 . In this year at primary school, we will support and encourage them in their learning and activities they undertake, so they continue to develop as ambitious, curious and independent learners. I know we can count on you to do the same, so that your child will have a happy and productive year.
Being a Year 5/6 pupil promotes independence and will be the years where pupils make lasting memories. It is a time to allow pupils to become aware of who they are as both learner and as young adults while building on resilience, collaboration and communication skills that will stay with them lifelong. Here in Year 5/6, all pupils are valued as individuals and I am dedicated to motivating them to achieve their best. I know we are going to have lots of fun and exciting experiences in the process and I know that when our pupil's move on to their next class or school, they are equipped with the necessary skills for this every changing world.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the school and I will return your call as soon as possible. Alternatively, you can find the email address of the school on our homepage should you wish to email instead.
Many thanks,
Miss Francis.

Guided reading takes place every other week using a story chosen by their group. On alternative weeks, independent reading will take place. Please note, your child will need to bring their home reading book into school every day ready to carry out independent reading when requested.
Your child's PE day is Every Tuesday. This term we are covering dodgeball so please make sure your child has the appropriate clothing to participate.
Your child will be given spellings and a quick piece of literacy/mathematics work every Friday. Please see the spelling strategies below to support your child with their spellings. If your child has been given homework on a Friday, please submit the homework by the following Wednesday.
Spellings are to be learnt by the following Monday.
When you read with your child, please use some of these questions - and ones of your own/ more suited to the text they are reading - to challenge their thinking. Your child may be able to read the text well; fluent, accurate, steady pace, with expression. However, do they understand the context of what is happening? Are they able to make connections or make inferences about what the author is trying to convey? 3 or 4 questions either during or after your reading session will improve your child's reading and help them synthesise and evaluate what they have read.
Each week your child will read with the class teacher. One week will be independent reading, the second week will be as a whole group through guided reading. If your child has completed their reading book, and both parent and teacher are happy for them to move onto their next book, your child has the responsibility to select and look after that reading book. They need to show the teacher before placing it in their bag. The class teacher will make a note of the new book they have chosen to keep a record.
Yellow books will no longer be completed to show your child has read, however teacher notes are taken to ensure your child is monitored and progress made.
Your child has been allocated their groups and will experience all activities by the end of the week.
Please go through a variety of spelling strategies with your child to ensure they have multiple ways to spell a word. They may be asked to practice their spellings using a particular strategy week on week. Use these strategies to support you.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I love travelling and always try to visit different and interesting places. I think if I was able to choose anywhere in the world and money was no object, I would travel to Machu Picchu to follow the Inca Trail. I would love to explore the natural beauty and take a walk back in history. I would also love to go to Borneo to see the Orangutangs and Gorillas as I am a huge animal lover. I would go backpacking and ensure I get to taste all the wonderful foods they offer and maybe even learn some Quechua language along the way.
What is your first memory from school?
One of my first memories from school would have to be when I was in Year 2 and I decided it was acceptable to play with dirty paint water that was being poured away down the drain. Not only did I cover my hands with the multi coloured water, but my new, fresh crisp white dress was turned a delightful range of colours. I had to sit on the naughty step and I will always remember this day!
What are your must-have smartphone apps?
Duo Lingo is an app I always like to use. I have always wanted to learn Spanish, so I use this app to help me learn the basics in my spare time.
What would your last meal be?
My last meal would have to be a fillet steak with sweet potato fries, blue cheese drizzle and giant, juicy onion rings. For dessert, it would have to be cheesecake. Oh my gosh it is the best! If you have not tried it then you must one day.
We will be focusing on these times tables this term and your child has been asked to practice this at home at every opportunity.
I have found that the best way to remember the times tables is by rapping them. Not only does it work-it is fun!!
J2E is a fantastic resource that your child has access to through their Hwb accounts. Every day your child will be practicing their times tables and spellings in a guided reading rotation, as well as through daily routines in their literacy and numeracy lessons. Many parents ask how they can best support their child at home. Not only is J2Blast a familiar starting point, it is also fun and engaging that will keep them entertained for hours!
