The classroom environment must be prepared.
→ Prepare screens for projecting PC screens and cameras for distribution.
Consideration should be given to students participating in both face-to-face and online courses.
Howling countermeasures are required.
→ When the face-to-face class connects to Zoom, students are reminded to mute their microphones.
It is necessary to confirm which class format the student took.
There are various ways to conduct a Hyflex method, depending on the number of participating students and the combination of equipment. OEC introduces two plans: the "Basic Plan," in which a teacher conducts a Hyflex method by themself, and the "Advanced Plan," in which a teacher conducts a Hyflex method with a TA or others.
Required equipment: Basic Plan
The Basic Plan is characterized by the most straightforward and least prone to operational errors.
iPad
・The built-in camera takes pictures.
・Photograph the instructor's appearance.
・Slides, and blackboards will also be taken.
Teacher's PC
・Project the slides to the projector.
Zoom
・Set the iPad as "host".
・Set the teacher's PC as "participant."
In the Basic Plan, the roles of the equipment used are divided so that everything is clear when troubleshooting. In addition, by delivering lectures on iPads, lecturers can give lectures either sitting or standing without being distracted by the camera position.
Launch a Zoom meeting on an iPad.
The teacher's PC will attend the meeting.
Place an iPad in front of the teacher to take pictures (use of a tripod is recommended)。
Check the transmission status on the teachers' PC.
※If the teacher's voice is not loud enough, a loudspeaker microphone in the classroom is available.
Tell students participating online to submit questions via Zoom chat rather than audio.
The teacher will regularly check the chat on the teacher's PC.
Required Equipment: Advanced Plan
In the Advanced Plan, roles are divided between faculty and operators (TAs, etc.).
Teacher
・A web camera delivers video and audio.
・Project the slides to the projector.
・Screen share slides.
Operators (TA, etc.)
・Video streaming of students will be available.
・Check delivery status.
・Monitor and support students taking the online course.
Zoom
・Set the operator as "host".
・Set the teacher as a "participant."
Teacher
Participate in meetings from the teacher's PC.
Place a web camera before the teacher to take pictures (a tripod is recommended).
The teacher will transmit audio with an earphone microphone (wireless earphone mics are recommended).
Tell students participating online to submit questions via Zoom chat rather than audio.
Operators (TA, etc.)
Launch a Zoom meeting on the iPad.
Students are filmed with an iPad camera.
※ The portrait rights of students must be taken into consideration.
Check the video distribution status of the teacher on the screen.
Check the quality of the teacher's voice with an earphone microphone.
Chat questions from students are passed on to teachers.
Support students with connection problems.
Support group work for students connecting online (e.g., operating breakout rooms).
In the Advanced Plan, the roles of teacher and operator are shared, allowing the teacher to give lectures without worrying about troubleshooting. In addition, communication with students is facilitated, allowing online students to attend classes with peace of mind.
The iPad's built-in microphone can record sound surprisingly well if the classroom is quiet.
Only one Zoom microphone will be turned on in the classroom to prevent feedback.
Students in face-to-face classes will be informed not to use the Zoom connection.
→ Avoiding line congestion
→ Avoid audio problems (feedback)
Students in face-to-face classes can ask and answer questions without looking at the Zoom chat.
Activate Zoom's "Auto Record" for recording.
※"Local record" and "cloud record" can be set.
In addition, cloud recording can be configured to save audio-only files, chat messages, and other recordings as needed.
Recorded videos will be available for students taking the course on demand.
Videos delivered on demand are available to students who need help to take the course in real-time or enter the classroom due to problems with the network environment.
Recorded videos can be used as review materials, preparatory materials for the following year's classes, etc.
Many laser pointers are not used in Hyflex method classes because they are only pointed at the classroom screen.
Since the cursor on a PC is relatively difficult to see, a pointer on a videoconferencing system is used.
Teachers can provide a microphone for the Zoom sound collection to deliver an audible voice.
To prevent feedback, remind students to turn off their microphones when students in the classroom connect to Zoom.
Be sure to adjust the volume output volume on the PC side beforehand.
※Many video conferencing systems, such as Zoom, can test microphones and speakers.
If you want to improve the quality of your audio, you have the following options.
Add a sound-collecting microphone for Zoom
Connect the earphone microphone to the iPad
・Wireless recommended (to accommodate teacher movement)
・Single-ear headset with Bluetooth connection
※Charge in advance
Teachers wear two microphones.
・Microphone installed in the classroom
・Microphone for Zoom
If you want two-way audio between the classroom and online, one option is to use a microphone speaker system for Zoom. It is helpful to use a sound-collecting microphone and speakers with echo cancellation.
Send the voice of the teacher and the student in a face-to-face class through a sound-collecting microphone
Student voices from online participation are broadcast to the classroom via loudspeakers
・Enables audio question and answer sessions
・Interactive presentation after group work
※ Mute the sound-collecting microphone when not in use
Questions from the Classroom
→ The online student will not hear the student's voice in the classroom. Instead, questions will be recited by the teacher and then answered.
Questions from Zoom
→ Questions from online students will not be heard by students participating in person. Questions will be accepted via chat only.
Teachers should read the chat questions out loud and then answer them.
The Hyflex method of checking attendance and group activities varies depending on the type of student participation. We recommend creating and recording a ledger in Excel or other formats to keep track of multiple participation histories.
Separate groups of students for in-person and online participation.
→ Because mixing the two may not allow for smooth communication, students participating in person and online will be divided into separate groups, and the group representatives will make presentations. The representative of the group will give a presentation.
→ Students in the classroom can present their work in front of the iPad.
Teachers will ensure the group work process is communicated to students in person and online.
Notification of how to contact teachers and TAs when problems arise (Zoom chat, email, etc.).
Especially since it is difficult to monitor students' online participation status, we need to devise a way to do so.
・There will be time for presentations after the group work.
・Another method is to have a shared folder, such as Google Drive, to share work content between teachers and students and among students.
