Develop a lesson plan to teach a 5th-grade class about how immigration policy has changed and stayed the same throughout the history of the United States.

Focus on the following topics.

• Laws and policies

• Discrimination (including nativism)

• Campaigns to promote equity and diversity

I recommend starting with lists of ethnic groups and events to begin coming up with patterns to discuss. Remember, you need to know this stuff inside and out to distill it into something that this age group can understand and process.

Think about what you wish you knew at that age and package the story into something engaging.
