What were the causes and effects of the Red Scare after WWII?

McCarthyism

  • 1938: House of un-American Activities Commission established

  • 1940: Smith Act required all aliens in the United States to register and made it illegal to advocate the overthrow of government by force.

  • 1947: Executive Order 9835 established a loyalty program and instituted procedures requiring investigation of people seeking government jobs.

  • 1950: (McCarran) Internal Security Act required communists to register with the government and established a subversive activities control board.
