What it was: A trading system connecting Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
Main driver: The slave trade, which both fueled and expanded the system.
Early example: Sir John Hawkins (England) carried enslaved Africans to Spanish colonies for profit.
Spanish control: Through the asiento system, Spain licensed slave traders, taxing them while keeping control.
Huge profits for merchants, investors, and governments.
Involved powerful investors like Isaac Newton and Queen Anne through the South Sea Company.
Led to speculation and collapse in the South Sea Bubble (1720).
Slavery expanded, with brutal conditions and rising demand.
By the 1800s, slavery’s economic entrenchment meant abolition often required violent conflict.
The question for this lesson is not as straightforward as it may seem. The word "how" requires some thought about the changes that occur over time.Â
Consider what manufacturing and trade was like before the resources of the Americas were discovered.Â
Next, consider what it took for each country to situated themselves as the controllers of those resources.
It's important to remember a few of the trade goods traveling to and from each region. Think about how geography affects what comes from a region to help remember the examples.
Europe → Africa: Guns, rum, textiles, and manufactured goods traded for enslaved Africans.
Africa → Americas: Enslaved Africans endured the Middle Passage and were sold.
Americas → Europe: Raw materials from slave labor—sugar, tobacco, cotton, molasses, gold, and silver—sent back to Europe.
