PPE Design
A Design Challenge to create Personal Protective Equipment Devices
Challenge
Using the HKIS Design Cycle, design, create and improve an idea for personal protective equipment or devices.
To complete this project you must meet the CRITERIA and CONSTRAINTS listed on this site. Your project should be documented through photos and/or video and published on a project site.
Constraints
Problem
Design must address a need for personal protection.
Materials
Home Invention Kit. Various materials to be handed out at request.
Size
As a PPE, it should be wearable.
Structure
Prototypes should be as stable as possible. Each improvement should add to the structure.
Criteria
Your design and product should meet the following three (3) criteria areas:
FUNCTIONAL
design solves a problem or meets a need or desire
product functions reliably and consistently
STABLE
design is strong and holds together during prolonged use.
careful thought is given to intended use, wearability and size
uses reinforcements where needed to prevent wear and tear
VISUAL APPEAL
design and construction is minimal
adhesives are invisible or cleanly applied (hidden)
design considers aesthetics of clothing, would you wear it?
demonstrates attention functionality (purpose) and practicality
Project Ideas
The following project ideas are intended to inspire you to think of other ideas not necessarily that you build the exact project. Some are in development at major universities that have teams of people. Use your imagination and inquiry to come up with your own ideas.
Design Cycle
Throughout the project work within each of the phases of the HKIS Design Cycle below:
Imagine
What ideas come to mind? What have you seen before?
Inquire
Ask A LOT of questions. What is needed? Can we improve on existing designs? What is most important about the equipment? What features are necessary?
Create
Start prototyping ideas that come to mind or that you have planned out through sketching.
Reflect
Share your prototypes with others and ask for specific feedback. Does the design meet the criteria? Does it meet someones needs/desires? Does it solve a particular problem? What do you like best? What needs immediate improvement?
Improve
Improve or make (another) prototypes based on your testing, reflecting, and feedback from others. Often improvements are made by creating a second full prototype. Remember, avoid gluing and taping too much as you may need to make further improvements.
Materials
Collect your items
Wearable items (old shirts, sweatshirt, hats, backpack, etc.)
Tools:
Home Invention Kit (micro:bit)
cutting, adhesives, supplies (as needed)
