Interactive Display

Designing an Interactive Attraction

Project

Using the HKIS Design process, design, create, and improve an interactive window display that attracts visitors to the IDEA Studio.

Constraints

  • display uses a maximum width (~ 1100 mm) of a window pane in the IDEA Studio

  • merges with adjacent window displays within the theme of the display

  • controlled by single board microcontroller(s) to produce interactivity

  • mainly constructed from materials that are recyclable or up-cycled

Criteria

  • effectively uses sensors (input) and actuators (output) to create interactivity

  • Design relies on code programmed by a member of the design team

  • includes digitally fabricated elements designed by a design team member

  • Stable
The display element is stable and durable enough to hold up over time and regular use.

  • Functional
Display is functional and reliably works as designed.

  • Aesthetics
The display element is pleasing to look and hides construction materials and design

Outcomes

  • Attractive design which finds students inviting classmates to visit and interact

  • Experience using the design process to plan, create and improve

  • Designing for an interactive user experience

  • Fluency with coding for interactivity with hardware

  • Develop construction skills for structure, mechanics

  • Understanding of computer as a design element, construction material, and vehicle of ideas
