Non-renewal is the mechanism to separate probationary teachers whose performance do not meet expectations.
Administrators must provide support, development, and remediation to teachers whose performance do not meet expectations.
These efforts should be thoroughly documented via letters, memorandums, growth plans, etc.
If teacher performance does not improve, an administrator may request non-renewal for the next school/contract year.
Notification to the employee of less than acceptable job performance along with adequate and appropriate documentation of support/remediation must accompany requests for non-renewal.
As a reminder, non-renewal applies to probationary contract status teachers. Separation of continuing contract status teachers is administered via a termination process. Should an administrator desire to "break" a teacher contract prior to the end of a school year (or at the end of a school year), a termination process is required. A termination can occur at any time, with appropriate supporting documentation.
Annually, the timeline in which to submit teacher non-renewals will be shared with administrators via a Principal Memo.
