To assist in ensuring continuity and consistency in self-contained special education classrooms, special education instructional assistants (IAs) assigned to these settings may serve as substitute teachers when the regular classroom teacher is not available.
This option may be implemented under the following conditions:
The IA must be assigned to a self-contained classroom (integrated services, regional, or early childhood special education (ECSE)).
The IA must voluntarily opt in to serve in the substitute teacher role and complete this Interest Form.
The principal must support/agree to the IA’s participation in this capacity. A form, requesting confirmation will be sent to the principal via email.
The IA must successfully complete required training and pass a designated assessment.
Upon approval, the principal and the IA will receive notice that they have been approved to serve as a substitute along with instructions for entering assignments into SmartFind.
The IA may serve as the substitute teacher no more than 5 consecutive days.
When the IA assumes substitute teaching duties, a separate substitute may be assigned to fulfill the IA’s regular responsibilities to ensure instructional coverage.
IAs who have received previous approval are not required to reapply.
