A minimum of four teachers in a subject area, including the chair, constitute a department for which a chair may be authorized. A department may be formed by combining more than one subject area; teachers and coordinators in the areas involved should advise the principal in this regard.
Principal consults with the appropriate subject area specialist and nominates employee.
Principal forwards the information to the HR Specialist.

The Code of Virginia establishes minimum duty free period requirements for elementary and secondary teachers. The principal establishes the duty free period based on program needs.

The Code of VA establishes standard caseloads for elementary and secondary teachers. When a teacher's caseload exceeds the established standard their contract and compensation must be adjusted.
Human Resources works with the principal and area director to identify employees whose caseloads exceed the established standards.
Human Resources provides a revised contract and appropriate compensation to the employee.
