In just her third year as a teacher, Ms. Elliott has managed to make a big impact on the Blakelock community. Whether you find her leading clubs, or helping students through complex scientific problems, Ms. Elliott makes a notable effort to connect with her students.
The TABloid was delighted when she generously agreed to an interview, giving us a glimpse into her teaching journey, hobbies and life philosophy.
Ever since she was a kid, Ms. Elliott dreamt of the stars; fantasizing about a life in space as an astronaut. Striving to meet her high ambitions, she arrived at Queens University, studying both science and education during her five year Concurrent Education program. As she grew up, Ms. Elliott was content settling for a career in marine biology, however during a particularly slow day in the science lab, she knew she wanted something more. “In a lab, I felt very bored,” she reflected. “You're not really talking to anyone all day, you're just looking at samples under a microscope over and over, filling out an Excel sheet. It wasn’t as riveting as I thought it would be.”

In an aim for a more exciting career, Ms. Elliott decided to pursue teaching, although her first job was not one that most would expect. Combining her love of travel and passion for science, Ms. Elliott took up a teaching position in Saint Martin, a small island in the Caribbean. “It is a super small island,” she added.“I always thought growing up in Oakville, that it was really small, but in Saint Martin there was only one road.”
Although she enjoyed her time in the Caribbean, Ms. Elliott returned to Canada one year later, arriving at Blakelock where she teaches Biology and Chemistry. “I love science so much,” she raved. "I think it's so cool to see other students show an interest and feel inspired, or to watch them understand something that I've taught them is very fulfilling. I don't feel like when I go home I've wasted my day; I feel like I've done something.”
When asked about her favourite part of the job, Ms. Elliott emphasized the fulfillment she gets from forming connections with others. “Getting to know students is the best part of the job. I love teaching because I'm never bored. I get to be with people that are fun all day long, rather than being alone with a microscope.”
Outside the classroom, Ms. Elliott plays intramural volleyball and racket sports. When she is not on the court, however, she enjoys the company of a good book and spending time with friends.
Her enthusiasm has no doubt rubbed off on both her students' personal and professional lives. It will be exciting to see where her career takes her next, as in just a few short years, Ms. Elliott has quickly become a beloved member of the Blakelock family.
