Ripley's Aquarium Sea Turtle
The Grade 10 Science programs were in for a treat these past few weeks with guest speakers and field trips regarding climate change and its impacts on our planet.
On Friday, December 1st, a McMaster University representative came to Blakelock to speak about climate change, carbon levels, and what students can do about these occurring issues.
Days later, on Tuesday, December 13th, a guest speaker named Jason Fonger visited Blakelock. He spoke to grade 10 students in the large gym about climate change and its relation to food consumption. In addition to promoting a healthier, more vegetable-based lifestyle, Fonger brought healthy vegan options for students to sample. These included granola bars, juice boxes, and different non-dairy milk options to introduce TAB students to various vegan options.
On Monday, December 19th, the grade 10 science classes furthered their knowledge of climate change and biology by taking a trip to Ripley's Aquarium in Toronto. During this educational and exciting experience, students were given time to explore the aquarium and its contents. They were also given the opportunity to participate in a squid dissection. Here, they learned about different parts of the squid, how it moves and survives, and ocean acidification due to human impact.
Overall, this past month has had many engaging and interactive opportunities for grade 10s. They were able to further scientific knowledge and recognize the impact their generation will have on the future of the environment.
Special thanks to the Blakelock Science Department, Mr. Iafrate, Ms. Elliott, and Mme. D’Alesio for these wonderful scientific opportunities.
