On the 15th and 16th of October, Blakelock held a free throw to raise awareness for breast cancer. Tickets were sold upon entry at a loonie per person for anyone not wearing pink, with all proceeds going to cancer research. Those who wore pink gained free admission for their spirit.
The basketball free throw was held in the large gym during lunch, and attracted many students and staff to the bleachers to spectate.
The top ten finalists were: Ryan Bawer, Jake Cardella, Austin Cesar, Mr. D’Angelo, Ahmed Ibrahim, Jeremy Moyo, Shahed Siam, and Kevin Tan.
Upon speaking to Mr. Kaufman, another of the free throws competitors, a member of the TABloid asked him to comment on how he felt about the event: “The crowd was ecstatic and the atmosphere electric. I missed way too many shots but still had a blast. I thought the event was a roaring success!”
After an amazing effort from all competitors, Kevin Tan, a Grade 12 student, was declared the ultimate free throw champion!
The feeling of the gym stayed positive and uplifting throughout both days, and the crowd stayed consistently excited. It was an event that brought the school community together and was truly a thrilling experience from start to finish. Kevin, the winner of the competition, had a few things to share about how it felt to compete:
“I just tried my best and focused on every shot ... I didn’t expect to win, it was a great experience overall!”
Additionally, Kevin was asked about why he signed up for the free throw: “I am a big fan of basketball, and at the same time, the tickets are for breast cancer so I just signed up.”
Overall, spectators and competitors alike had an excellent time; the large gym was filled with the roaring cheers of the crowd. Every athlete put their best efforts into the event and each match had everyone up on their feet.
Congratulations to all who competed for such a great cause!
