His true self
Beloved tech. teacher Mr. LeBlanc announced his retirement earlier this year and the Blakelock community is sad to see him go.
Mr. LeBlanc has been instrumental in developing such a positive influence in the Blakelock community for the entirety of his teaching career at TAB. After an impactful 16 years of teaching, including 9 years at Blakelock as a successful leader, department head and woodshop teacher, it is safe to say that Mr. LeBlanc has helped build a strong foundation within the TAB community through his kindness and countless hours of dedication to Blakelock staff and students.
Known as a caring and hard-working individual who pushes students to reach their goals, Mr. LeBlanc has enjoyed teaching and learning from his students to develop his own skills in construction. “Some of the things that I have done on my own have given me a great deal of pleasure,” Mr. LeBlanc said, speaking about pieces he’s created.
Believe it or not, Mr. LeBlanc wasn’t always a teacher. Before his career at TAB, he was a contractor for 29 years. It was in his previous career that he truly discovered his passion for teaching others and passing on his knowledge.
Here is a collection Mr. LeBlanc’s creations over the years:

In his final year at Blakelock, Mr. LeBlanc assisted the Drama department with their National Theatre Production of Layers. He built the set for the play, which competed at Burlington Central High school and received multiple compliments for its unique design. Mr. Houston worked closely with Mr. LeBlanc to design this stunning set piece.

Mr. LeBlanc also collaborated with the Girls Softball Team and crafted a home plate for our very own Tigers. The Girl’s Softball program at TAB has been dormant for the past decade, however, when Mme. Telford and Mr. Alchesi had plans to resurrect the program, Mr. LeBlanc jumped at the opportunity to contribute. Mr. LeBlanc will forever be remembered by his random acts of kindness and service at TAB, and the Girl’s Softball Team is another example of how Mr. LeBlanc has left his imprint on the TAB community.

These are just a few of the examples that Mr. LeBlanc contributed this year.
When asked to describe Mr. LeBlanc, it was clear the impact he has left on his fellow colleagues:
“Mr. LeBlanc is a lot of different people to a lot of people. I know Mr. LeBlanc as a master woodworker, a tireless innovator, and a patient mentor. To others, Mr. LeBlanc is known for managing the refuge known as the woodworking shop, or for introducing them to the classic works of Gordon Lightfoot. No matter who Mr. LeBlanc is to you, there is no doubt that we will miss him next year.” - Mr. Rochus
“Richard provides a safe and welcoming environment for his students, always going the extra mile. His classroom is always busy with students working on projects, and colleagues stopping by for a chat. Richard will be remembered for kindness, and he will be missed.” - Ms. Osmond
“Richard is one of the most kind and generous teachers I've met in my career. I have asked Richard to help the music department in a multitude of ways and he always exceeds expectations. A craftsman to his core, anything he endeavours upon is spectacular and with a whole lotta love. I will miss Richard's wisdom and smile around the building - a great gentleman!” - Ms. Abbott
“Richard has been a tremendous part of the success TAB drama has had over the years. Every crazy or creative idea we come up with for set pieces he is able to bring to life. His craftsmanship, experience and supportive attitude come together so perfectly and I have loved every minute I have had the chance to work with him in the shop.” - Mr. Houston
“ What I can say [about Mr. LeBlanc], from observing, talking to kids and peers [is that] he has always been: helpful, caring, always extending himself beyond the classroom, stoic, wise, and funny. All the years here and have never heard a bad word from anyone about him.” - Mr. Tambur

After retirement, his plans consist of building a workshop, a summer property and an apartment for himself at his son’s house. Additionally, he hopes to pursue golfing, fishing, and sleeping.
Mr. LeBlanc has some departing words of wisdom: “It’s been a pleasure being at TAB. One thing I suggest is that you try your best to respect people and show them kindness.”
Mr. LeBlanc is a large part of the Blakelock community, and he will be greatly missed. The next time you sit on a comfortable bench or chair or use a handcrafted music stand, remember Mr. LeBlanc’s timeless furniture and legacy.
