Blakelock is well known as a secondary school that hosts the French Immersion Program, but how much do you really know about TAB’s teachers? This month's teacher feature highlights Mme Mowbray, one of the many teachers who have a passion for the French language and teaches at T.A. Blakelock. She teaches Grade 10 Civics and Careers and Grade 10 History. Mme Mowbray was interviewed by some TABloid writers in order to gain an inside view into her life.
Mme Mowbray's post secondary education began at the University of Waterloo to earn a concurrent degree studying French and history. After this, she spent a year abroad in France. She returned later to Brock University to complete the last parts of her teacher training. At the beginning of her career as a teacher, she was frequently relocated to many different schools across the globe, including teaching in England. She has been in education since 1995 and has spent the last 8 years here as a staff member at T.A Blakelock. While teaching here, she has immersed herself deeply in the Blakelock community, taking part in many school clubs, such as leading the Wellness Club, and many other school wide events. A large passion for history and Canada as a country lead to her interest in the subjects she teaches now.
Outside of school, Mme Mowbray enjoys the outdoors, hiking, walking her dog Murphy, reading historical fiction, working out, and cooking. Recently, she has been trying to work on her strength training while working out, as well as continuing with other forms of exercise such as yoga. A TV series she has watched recently is Ted Lasso. She loves the show because of its positive and “feel good” messages. She takes much interest in learning and advocating for Indigenous issues, and has taken initiative to expand her personal knowledge and perspective by learning more about this subject.
A day in the life of Mme Mowbray begins with a 5am wake up. Mme starts her day with a cup of coffee and indulges in Today's News in order to give herself time to wake up. She sends some work emails, and heads down to her basement to workout. Once finished, she takes a shower, makes a smoothie, and heads off to school around 7:20am. While at school, she teaches second and fourth period, while also having her lunches packed full of tasks and activities. After a busy day, she returns home. She hangs out with her dog while doing some work, gets supper ready, and takes her dog on a long 1-2 hour walk to tire him out. Her goldendoodle, Murphy, is very social. Mme jokes that, “My dog has more friends than I do!”
Mme Mowbray is one of the many teachers who make T.A Blakelock the school it is today, all while doing it with a smile on her face!
