This spring season, Blakelock sports teams wrapped up the year with success.
On Wednesday June 7, the Varsity Girls Soccer Team ventured to Cobourg, Ontario for their OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) tournament games, after their 5-0 win in the GHAC (Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference) qualifier.
The team worked very hard and were motivated by their coaches Mr. Butler and Ms. Miller on the sidelines. They successfully brought home the gold medal for Girls AA soccer. This is the second team to win gold in OFSAA during Blakelock’s 2022-23 school year - the first being the Girls Volleyball Team.
Sienna Caesar, the M.V.P. award winner of the team, recounts how special this experience was: “This was one of the best ways to end off my senior year because everyone on the team meshed so well and we had so much chemistry on and off the field which made it so fun! Everyone played a huge part and we really did need everyone to pull off an OFSAA win. Absolutely no flaws.”
After the win!
Blakelock faced St. Mary’s in the finals. The game was tight and scoreless for both teams, leading into extra-time. Even with more time on the clock, the game remained 0-0. After a goalless double overtime, the Varsity Girls headed to a shootout.
In order to win, each team had five shots. First up was St Mary’s against Blakelock’s Holly Brimacombe in net, who saved one out of five shots. Blakelock selected five shooters in an attempt to take the win: Sienna Caesar, Regan Freill, Carsyn Weber, Kennedy Roode, and Addi Butler. All five girls made the shot, and Addi got the game-winner. Blakelock’s Varsity girls rushed to each other as well as their fans in celebration. With the 5-4 shootout victory, the girls achieved gold after a spectacular effort.
Senior teammate, Kennedy Roode, reflects on her time on the team: “My favourite part about the team is that it has players from all four grades, meaning it can carry on for years. Everyone bonded so well over the few months which was crucial in our success as we loved playing together so much. So much fun.”
Additionally, Grade 12 student, Carsyn Weber, stated, “I love these girls! [I’m] going to miss my favorite team.”
Jasmine Haneberry was the recipient of the Senior Girls Soccer Team Leadership Award, alongside both Sienna Caesar and Carsyn Weber were announced female Athletes of the Year for their outstanding contributions to TAB sports. Additionally, Kennedy Roode won the “Academic Athlete” award at this year’s Athletic Banquet.
The TABloid wishes the seniors of this team lots of good luck for their future endeavors.
Congratulations to the Varsity Girls Soccer Team for achieving the OFSAA Championship in such challenging feats!
