For the first time in Blakelock history, the grade 10 girls had the pleasure of welcoming a CPP (Community Pathways Program) class to participate in a rotation of fun gym activities. After planning for a week, the two groups came together on October 25th to play a variety of games in the large gym.
“We had the dress rehearsal last week,” says Mr. Alchesi, the teacher in charge of the event, “When we did [the dress rehearsal] we basically did a trial and error to see what works so modifications were very big, especially when teaching CPP students. So, instead of ten reps, we’d do five. You have to adjust to your audience, like, now, next time if we plan something like this they know exactly what capabilities the students have, and they can gear their activities to benefit the CPP students.”
Led by Mr. Alchesi’s grade 10 gym class, the CPP students formed groups to play several sports such as soccer, basketball, dodgeball, octopus, as well as participating in general warmup activities. Modifications were provided for students who needed them.
The CPP teacher, Mr. Lykouras, commented, “I think it went really well. It’s great for our students to integrate with one another and expose them to other students that they wouldn’t normally be communicating with.”
“The most important thing is that they’re enjoying themselves … I think it was a success,” Mikaela Morin, one of the organizing students added.
Overall, the CPP students, the grade 10s, and TAB staff had a phenomenal time playing games together. This was an experience that will definitely be remembered for both classes. Blakelock hopes to see the CPP students engaging with the physical education classes again.
