Welcome!

Delving Into Citizen Science!

As we all know, this school year has looked very different from any other year in most of our lives; "unprecedented," as some have said. Typically, participating in or designing and conducting a science research investigation project is a component of being in an advanced Biology class in Hanover County Public Schools. During the spring 2021 semester, Mrs. Coyner's virtual advanced Biology students completed an "unprecedented" version of science research investigation projects by utilizing citizen science. As defined by Oxford Languages, citizen science is, "the collection and analysis of data relating to the natural world by members of the general public, typically as part of a collaborative project with professional scientists." Check out the video on this page from the National Science Foundation for a more detailed explanation of what citizen science is and its importance. For their projects, students each chose a topic of interest to them, formulated a question they could virtually research related to the topic, then designed and conducted investigations based on those questions, relying on citizen science data to complete their investigations. This site features the final products of their dedicated work. Each project is featured on a different page, grouped within their respective classes, so check out the navigation at the left or top of this page to browse the different projects! Buttons on this page also link to each class (as well as a link to "best of show" if you have limited time to browse!), and a link to a YouTube playlist of all the videos associated with the projects is provided as well!
