The Effect of Microplastics in the Atlantic Ocean on Dolphins - Kaitlee
The purpose of my project was to bring up a major problem in the world that is affecting marine life everyday. The results from this research will hopefully motivate people to live their lives a little more cautiously and watch how much plastic waste they use every day. Also, I hope it will make you think about certain ways you can change your habits to make the planet a better place for not only marine life but also humans. The research is based on how much microplastic ends up in the Atlantic Ocean every year and how it affects the dolphins living there. Every year, thousands and thousands of dolphins are killed due to the overwhelming amounts of plastic waste in their environment.
The initial approach I took to complete this certain project was thinking about how unfair it is to the dolphins in the Atlantic. It is our fault as humans for letting the plastic waste get so bad to the point where it kills hundreds of thousands animals each year. The results I found based on my research was 100,000 dolphins get killed in one year due to microplastics. I also found over 17 million tons of plastic waste enters the Atlantic every year, and in 5 years, 173 million tons of waste ended up in the Atlantic Ocean. In conclusion, my investigation shows that if us humans take the proper steps into limiting the use of plastics, in less than 10 years, the dolphins living in the Atlantic Ocean will live a much healthier life and not nearly as many would be killed due to this problem.
