Multi‑Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your HCC account. During setup, you will be asked to verify your sign‑in using a second method, such as the Microsoft Authenticator app or a text message (SMS).
The instructions below describe what to expect under most conditions when signing in with a web browser and using a smartphone or tablet for MFA. Because devices and settings vary, it is not possible to provide step‑by‑step instructions for every situation.
You will be asked to verify your sign‑in during setup. Only approve requests you initiate yourself.
Email helpdesk@hcc.edu from your HCC email address or an email address we have on file to have your MFA sign in method reset.
Be sure to update your information in your Profile in the myHCC Dashboard if you change your personal email address or phone number; the Help Desk cannot change this information and it does not sync from your sign in methods.
Students can find this in: My Student Resources → My Student Profile → Update Bio Information
or contact Student Records to update your Mailing Address
Employees can find this in: Employee Information → Personal Information
or contact Department of People and Talent

It is only for verifying your sign‑in.
(a.k.a. OTP, code, one-time passcode, verification code)
After setting up your primary method, add a backup method.
This helps if:
You get a new device
Your primary method is unavailable
You need to re‑authorize access
You can manage or add methods later at: 👉 Manage your sign‑in methods

Microsoft Authenticator setup requires an internet connection
Push notifications require internet access
(Wi‑Fi or cellular data both work)
A cellular signal is NOT required if you have Wi‑Fi
Microsoft Authenticator can generate a one‑time passcode (OTP) even when offline, once it has been set up
This means you can use Microsoft Authenticator on campus over Wi‑Fi, even with poor cell reception or no cell service.
If you forgot your phone, please stop by the Help Desk in Frost 109 and we can generate a temporary access passcode for you.
If you lost your phone or replaced it (and don’t have access to the old one) please contact the Help Desk during work hours to reset your MFA options if you don't have a replacement device or have not set up an alternate method.
MFA reset requires ID verification.

Yes, MFA is required for all accounts to enhance security and protect your information.
Never share your passcode with anyone or approve a login that you did not initiate.
Once you become a student the account creation process is initiated. This process takes 24 hours to complete.
Check your personal email, the one you used when applying to the college.
Look for a message with the subject "Getting Started with your HCC Account"
This email will have your HCC email address, ID number and a link to sign in to change your password.
Yes. You can use the Microsoft Authenticator app for many accounts. Other institutions and businesses use MFA with Microsoft Authenticator. Add as many of your accounts as you can to Authenticator to add an additional layer of protection.
The Authenticator app generates a passcode that you can use to authenticate by clicking “I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now” and use the six-digit passcode (OTP or verification code) instead of the approval of the push notification.
