In Term 1, we had Ms. O' Connell and Ms. Rogers for biology. We studied viruses. We looked at the structure of viruses, we learned if they are living or dead, we looked at the three different shapes of viruses. We also looked at how cells replicate and the way most viruses infect human cells. Finally we looked at the stages of replication in bacteriophage. A Bacteriophage is a virus that infects bacteria. There are 5 stages of replicating bacteriophage.
Attachment- Virus attaches to hot cells
Entry- Virus forms a hole into the host cell and viral nucleic acid is pushed through.
Synthesis- The host nucleic acid is made inactive. The viral nucleic acid uses the hosts organelles to produce new viral nucleci acid and proteins.
Release- The host cell bursts to release between 100 and 100,000 new viruses.
Assembly- New viruses are made inside host cells using the viral molecules that have been produced.
We then had to make a presentation on any human or animal virus of our choice, I chose Ebola.
We also looked at the Blood. We looked at the 4 parts of the blood.
Platelets
White blood cells
Red blood cells
Plasma
We looked at the functions of all parts of the blood. We learned why blood clotting is important and we learnt the terms Haemophilian and thrombosis.
Then for our assignment we had to make a model of the blood using food.
