Summer Schools

After a turbulent two years we are delighted that our pre-16 summer schools are back! Taking place on Sunday 24th – Tuesday 26th July 2022, we are offering students in Year 10 and 11 the opportunity to take part in our residential summer school programme at the University of Leicester.

What does a summer school involve?

Summer schools are a fantastic opportunity for young people from state schools to visit a university campus and halls of residence and experience what it is like to study at a university. It will be a packed three-day schedule filled with various activities to showcase Higher Education. This includes;

-        Taster lectures and seminars

-        Evening activities to replicate society events

-        Meeting academics and peers

-        Trying out university catering facilities

-        Living in university halls of residence.

This year we have two strands to our summer school.

1.      Medicine and Allied Health strand

2.      The School of Arts strand (English and Film Studies).

Who is the summer school for?

We host our summer school to give young people from underrepresented groups the opportunity to fully engage in life as a university student. Therefore we will be prioritising applications from students who meet any one or more of the indicators below. These will all be assessed based on the students application form.

-        Students who are or have been eligible for free school meals during secondary school

-        Students who are entitled to pupil premium and or discretionary payments

-        Students who are from one of the following groups – gypsy, roma and traveller communities, children of military families, and asylum seekers or refugees.

-        Students who have a disability or long term health condition and are in receipt of the PIP.

-        Care experienced young people

-        Young carers

-        Students whose parent/carer did not go to university

-        Students who are estranged from their parents

Unlike previous years, teachers and parents/carers are not invited to accompany the students on the summer school. However, we can now share the names of students who attend the summer school with their school or college. Email schools@le.ac.uk after the 28th March for this information.

How can students apply?

To apply for summer school students will need to complete the online application form here, before Monday 28th March. All students will need their parent or carer to consent to the young person taking part and complete a small section themselves. We’ve included some promotional materials to this email to help you promote the exciting opportunity to your students. Please do feel free to share these however you see best.

Finally, looking ahead to Year 12..

We are hosting a Progression Programme Taster Evening on the 9th March (18:00 – 17:30) for Year 11 students who would like to learn more about our programmes. The programmes are to encourage and support students from WP backgrounds into Higher Education, offering a wide range of support. You can find out more about our progression programmes (including entry requirements) here.

Students who meet at least one entry requirement can book their place at the event using the link here, and entering the pin h0lOTw.
