Turkey Trouble

This week we watched the story Turkey Trouble by Wendy J. Silvano online. Please click on the image to the left to view the Turkey Trouble video. After hearing the story, the students were asked to write a friendly letter to Farmer Jake. The letter was to be written from the perspective of the Turkey in the story, trying to persuade Farmer Jake to try something different for Thanksgiving dinner.

The students had a great time writing the letter and some of their arguments were pretty convincing!

Epic Books

The students have been able to access Epic books during Read to Self time. They can read a variety of genres on this site as well as select the "read to me" option.

Students are able to use our unique class code: ebg7806 to gain free access to this site until 4 pm each day. Time spent on Epic can be used on your child's home reading sheet.

Typing Club

We have been spending some time each day practicing proper keyboarding skills. The students have access to the premium version of Typing Club and can utilize this program at home as well. They can use the link to the left, login and "sign in with google".

Math

XtraMath Daily Practice

XtraMath is our daily math fact practice. The students will progress through addition, subtraction, multiplication and division levels at their own rate.

Please click on the picture to the left to be directed to the XtraMath sign in page. I highly recommend that they use this site to practice their math facts at home. Mastery of their math facts will make learning more complex concepts a lot easier.

Mathletics

Mathletics is a comprehensive online learning tool with lessons and activities specifically aligned to the Alberta math curriculum.

Please have your child log in with google to take advantage of this program at home. Their username and password can be found on the first page of their agenda. I will assign activities that are align with objectives being taught in class, so this will be great practice!

Jump Math

This week we continued with our Patterns and Algebra unit in math. The following outcomes were assessed:

  • extend patterns using rules expressed in words and identify simple pattern rules.

  • create a T-table for growing and shrinking patterns and identify rules of number patterns using T-tables.

Science

Waste and Our World

In Science we continued with our Waste in Our World unit. We focused on the following topics this week:

  • Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

  • Composting Life Cycle

  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

  • Hazardous Waste and Our Planet

Worms

To go along with our Waste in Our World unit, we have a compost bin rotating through the grade 4 classrooms. The bin contains a mulched paper layer, peat layer, soil/worm mixture layer and food layer. The worms are fed a blended meal of our daily composting scraps. The students are excited to see the Composting Life Cycle in action!
