Let's Go Camping

We continued our project-based unit in Language Arts called "Let's Go Camping."

After using the Travel Alberta website to pick their top four places to camp, the students narrowed down their choices to select their final destination. Using Google, they answered some important questions about the distance away, weather, temperature, and terrain of their chosen campsite. We then worked through a Camping Supplies list, selecting items that we feel we might need on our camping trip. The students then chose their top eight must-have items from the Camping Supplies page. They chose their items carefully, selecting each item because of the purpose it serves. We then completed a Shopping List activity where the students were given 100 credits and had to select food items, for their camping trip, from the menu without going over the 100 credits. Finally, they used their shopping list to create a menu for the day; including breakfast, lunch, snack and supper.

Word Work

This week the students completed activites on irregular plurals - adding "ies", "es", and "s" to words.

You can view your child's work on Google Classroom.

Math

Division Facts Practice Booklet

We started a Division Facts booklet this week. The students work through a page of division questions and record how long it takes them to complete the page. We mark these questions together as a class. The goal is to improve speed and accuracy.

Mathletics

Mathletics is a comprehensive online learning tool with lessons and activities specifically aligned to the Alberta math curriculum. Your child has been assigned activities that align to the lessons taught in class. Please have your child spend some time at home to complete these activities.

Jump Math

This week we wrapped up our Geometry unit. The following outcomes were covered:

  • Introduction to Slides

  • Reflections

  • Rotations

  • Edges, Vertices, and Faces

The students reviewed what they have learned in math by playing a couple Blookets.

Science

We finished our study of Plant Growth and Changes and completed some in-class review. The students spent time looking over their notes, quizzing each other, and practicing with our blooket. Then completed the unit test with a combination of multiple choice, matching, true or false and labelling questions.

P.E.

This week in PE, the students used the pool noodles again to participate in a variety of tag games.

Some of the favourites are Animal Tag, PacMan Tag, Survivor Tag and Frozen Tag.

Movie Afternoon

We recently finished our class read aloud of The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate, which is the sequal to the New York Times bestseller The One and Only Ivan.

One and Only Ivan is inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, and told from the point of view of Ivan himself. It is an unforgetable novel and movie that celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendship.
