Mindful Monsters

Mrs. Angela with Mental Health Capacity Awareness (MHCA) joined our class on Wednesday to present a program called "Mindful Monsters." Mindfulness means to be calm and focused on the present moment. Mrs. Angela discussed what mindfulness looks like inside as well as outside our bodies. We also talked about the positive effects of kindness on our brains. Kindness increases our energy, self esteem, and overall happiness. It also decreases our pain, stress, and anxiety. Mrs. Angela provided the students with some suggestions for 10 Random Acts of Kindness that they can do every day. The students really enjoyed the presentation and look forward to their next session with Mrs. Angela.

Riverview Raiders Google Meet

Raptor to Raider Transition

Traditionally the grade 4 students would have an opportunity to walk over to Riverview School to meet with the principal, vice principal and the grade 5 teachers. This year we had to change our plans a bit but we were still able to meet Mrs. Kehoe, Mr. Coffin and have a virtual tour of Riverview School. The grade 4 students also wrote friendly letters to the current grade 5 students, who will be responding to answer all of our questions.

KidBlog

This week we completed:

Weekend Update - we learned how to include a link in our post

Talk About it Tuesday - Changing Alberta's Capital

WeSearch Wednesday - National Dolphin Day

Text Talk Thursday - National Titanic Remembrance Day

Find it Friday - Toy Shopping

Please check out our class blog to see your child's writing.

Shel Silverstein

This week we read upside down in the poem "Oops!" from Where the Sidewalk Ends. Then the students created their own poem about Shel in the tree, starting at the bottom of the page and working up. We also read "Fear" from A Light in the Attic and then students replaced the nouns and verbs to create their own version of Shel's signature style. On Wednesday, we read "Everything On It" and completed individual drawings with the craziest hot dog toppings we could think of.

Math

XtraMath Daily Practice

XtraMath is our daily math fact practice. The students should be on the multiplication level at this point.

If your child is still on addition or subtraction, please have them practice these facts nightly.

Mathletics

Mathletics is a comprehensive online learning tool with lessons and activities specifically aligned to the Alberta math curriculum. Your child has been assigned activities that align to the lessons taught in class. Please have your child spend some time at home to complete these activities.

Jump Math

This week we continued working on our Decimals unit in math. The following outcomes were covered:

  • ordering fractions and decimals

  • adding and subtracting tenths

We also completed a decimals check-in quiz.

Blooket

We spent some time on Blooket practicing what we have learned in class. We completed Ordering Tenths Decimals. Make sure you login to Blooket before clicking the link to access the Ordering Tenths Decimals game. This game is really good practice of the concepts we are focusing on in class.

Escape Room

The students were so excited to complete a Digital Escape Room this week! They were challenged with 4 fraction and decimal clues to unlock and escape. The students were given 2 lifelines to use (support from Mrs. Delbridge, Miss Wold or Mrs. Tewitz). This was definitely a fun way to review what they have been learning in class.

Social Studies

Alberta: Celebrations and Challenges

We started discussing the diversity in Alberta, talking about the most common ethnic groups and languages spoken. We read the book The Doll, written by Dr. Tran-Davies (a local doctor and Vietnamese refugee). The students loved this story and were so excited to read it before the release date!

We also began a discussion on tourism and the students worked on an Itinerary Project of their chosen city. They created slides on the Attractions & Tours, Natural Attractions, Food & Entertainment, Accomodations, Environmental Impact and Local Wildlife.

Please ask your child to show you their completed Itinerary Project in Google Classroom.

Art

Feather Art

Using "Dawn Flight" as our mentor text, the students completed a directed drawing of an eagle feather. They outlined their feathers using a black oil pastel and painted their page using 2 watercolour painting techniques.

"The eagle is a symbol of truth, power and freedom as it roams the sky. Its wings represent the balance between male and female, each dependent upon the strengths and abilities of the other. When one holds the eagle feather, one must speak the truth as positively as one can, for the ear of the Creator is that much closer to the feather of the eagle. Therefore, First Nations people honour the feather of the eagle with great care, showing it respect and honesty at all times. To be given an eagle feather is the highest honour that can be awarded within First Nations culture."
