Mindful Monsters
Mindful Monsters
Mrs. Angela with Mental Health Capacity Awareness (MHCA) joined our class on Wednesday to present a program called "Mindful Monsters." Mindfulness means to be calm and focused on the present moment. Mrs. Angela discussed what mindfulness looks like inside as well as outside our bodies. We also talked about the positive effects of kindness on our brains. Kindness increases our energy, self esteem, and overall happiness. It also decreases our pain, stress, and anxiety. Mrs. Angela provided the students with some suggestions for 10 Random Acts of Kindness that they can do every day. The students really enjoyed the presentation and look forward to their next session with Mrs. Angela.

Traditionally the grade 4 students would have an opportunity to walk over to Riverview School to meet with the principal, vice principal and the grade 5 teachers. This year we had to change our plans a bit but we were still able to meet Mrs. Kehoe, Mr. Coffin and have a virtual tour of Riverview School. The grade 4 students also wrote friendly letters to the current grade 5 students, who will be responding to answer all of our questions.

This week we read upside down in the poem "Oops!" from Where the Sidewalk Ends. Then the students created their own poem about Shel in the tree, starting at the bottom of the page and working up. We also read "Fear" from A Light in the Attic and then students replaced the nouns and verbs to create their own version of Shel's signature style. On Wednesday, we read "Everything On It" and completed individual drawings with the craziest hot dog toppings we could think of.

Escape Room
The students were so excited to complete a Digital Escape Room this week! They were challenged with 4 fraction and decimal clues to unlock and escape. The students were given 2 lifelines to use (support from Mrs. Delbridge, Miss Wold or Mrs. Tewitz). This was definitely a fun way to review what they have been learning in class.

We started discussing the diversity in Alberta, talking about the most common ethnic groups and languages spoken. We read the book The Doll, written by Dr. Tran-Davies (a local doctor and Vietnamese refugee). The students loved this story and were so excited to read it before the release date!

"The eagle is a symbol of truth, power and freedom as it roams the sky. Its wings represent the balance between male and female, each dependent upon the strengths and abilities of the other. When one holds the eagle feather, one must speak the truth as positively as one can, for the ear of the Creator is that much closer to the feather of the eagle. Therefore, First Nations people honour the feather of the eagle with great care, showing it respect and honesty at all times. To be given an eagle feather is the highest honour that can be awarded within First Nations culture."
