Students will look at images to explain the impact that the Muckrakers had on society.

Muckrakers | Journalism in Action | PBS LearningMediaMeet the muckrakers: a group of journalists at the turn of the twentieth century who used investigative reporting and photojournalism to expose injustice. In this resource, we’ll learn about the journalistic techniques that muckrakers pioneered and the social and economic issues they championed. Analyze the gallery images together as a class, reading the image descriptions for context clues. For each image, discuss together using the discussion questions found under Student Support Materials on the right side of this page. Content warning: Slides 3 and 4 contain descriptions of lynchings. In Slide 3, an article by Ida B. Wells contains a slur referring to Black people. You may determine this content is not appropriate for your class and skip to the next slide, or you may decide to provide additional context to your students before viewing the slides.

2. Students will read the article on Khan Academy and answer the quetions that follow.

3 Students will watch a video to determine whether or not the Muckrakers were true investigative journamlists or just trying to stir trouble.

4. Using the attached article, students will create a graphic organizer of the Muckrakers explaining what they tried to accomplish and the effects of their works.
