As we step into March, a month dedicated to honoring the invaluable contributions and achievements of women throughout history, we are thrilled to share a lineup of events and resources curated by MBA Program Office, Georgetown Women in Business (GWIB), Forte Fellows, the Student Government Association (SGA), and other MBA student organizations.

MBA Lunch and Learn: Dr. Nawar Shara (by Business and Government Alliance - BGA)

Dr Shara is the Chief for Research Data Science for the MedStar Health Research Institute as well as the Co-Director of the Center of Biostatistics, Informatics and Data Science. Her research interests focus on collaborative and team approaches for big data solutions, predictive analytics, data mining, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) data solutions such as voice assisted devices to improve patient outcomes, patient-provider communication and reduce healthcare utilization.

Self-Defense Classes (GUPD)

The Georgetown University Police Department and the Student Safety Advisory Board are pleased to offer Basic Self-Defense Courses. This 4 hour workshop includes both information on risk reduction as well as instruction on a number of hands-on techniques.

- The first Women's History Day was held in 1909.
- The day became Women's History Week in 1978.
- In 1987, Women's History Month began.
- The president declares every March Women's History Month. Every Women's History Month has a theme: The Women's History Month theme for 2024 celebrates “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.” This year the National Women's History Alliance “will recognize women throughout the country who understand that, for a positive future, we need to eliminate bias and discrimination entirely from our lives and institutions.”
- Wyoming Territory was the first place in the U.S. to grant women the right to vote.
- The 19th Amendment didn't give all women the right to vote. It wasn't until 1965 that women of all races could legally vote.
- Marie Curie was the first person (and only woman) to receive two Nobel prizes.
Geraldyn "Jerrie" Cobb was the first woman to pass astronaut testing in 1961.
Women couldn't get credit cards on their own until 1974.
Aretha Franklin was the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Women make up 27 percent of Congress.
More women are earning college degrees than men.
The gender pay gap still persists. Women of color are paid even less.
In 2021, 57.8 percent of all women participated in the labor force.

Celebrating Women’s History Month: During the month of March, Georgetown joins the nation in celebrating the many contributions of women students, faculty and staff at the university. From milestones in women’s education at the graduate level to research on women’s health observed at a laundromat, there’s plenty to explore if you want to learn more about women’s history at Georgetown.
