MBA Community Fellow & Advocate Distinction
Service to Others is central to the Georgetown University mission and Jesuit Values.
The MBA Community Fellows Program was created to recognize students who have made such service to others a personal priority and aims to foster a culture that embraces, supports and rewards community service.
During their time in the MBA program, individuals who complete community service hours totaling at least the following will be recognized as Community Fellows or Community Advocates:
Community Fellow: 100+ hours
Community Advocate: 75-100 hours

ACADEMIA/TUTORING
The Communication Exchange Program (Fordham University) - Connect with graduate international business students who cannot attend university in the US this year to help them practice their informal listening and speaking skills. Meet with your communication exchange partner for 1 hour per week for the academic semester.
DC Reads - Georgetown University's DC Reads is a tutoring, mentoring, and advocacy program that serves K-5th grade students who are a grade level or more behind in literacy skills. Volunteer to tutor elementary school students.
DC Schools Project - Georgetown University's DC Schools Project (DCSP) is a tutoring, mentoring, and advocacy program that engages Georgetown students as volunteer and Federal Work Study (FWS)-funded tutors to provide English language tutoring and support for youth and adults of immigrant backgrounds in Washington, DC.
Junior Achievement of Greater Washington - Help Junior Achievement of Greater Washington to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy by educating students in grades K-12 about financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.
Northstar Tutoring - Volunteer to tutor/mentor a low-income student to provide academic support and personal attention they might not otherwise have.
Wright to Read - Wright to Read is a literacy tutoring-mentoring program that works to match volunteer tutor-mentors with Alexandria City Public School students who need extra support in their literacy skills.
Zooniverse - Assist professional researchers worldwide in projects that result in discoveries, datasets useful to the broader research community, and many publications.
HELPING OTHERS
A Wider Circle - Help advance equity in the greater Washington, DC region by fostering the exchange of goods, skills, and connections from neighbor to neighbor, and by engaging in advocacy to address the root causes of poverty.
Amnesty International - Amnesty Internationalis an international non-governmental organization focused on human rights, whose mission is to campaign for "a world in which every person enjoys all [...] human rights." Volunteers are generally recruited on a part time basis for up to 6 months.
Arlington Free Clinic - This clinic provides free healthcare to low-income and uninsured persons in Arlington County. Virtual administrative volunteer opportunities are available.
Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind – Get paired one-on-one with blind or visually paired adults to assist with daily activities such as reading mail, grocery shopping, or running errands.
Dress for Success – This organization helps women achieve economic independence by providing support, professional attire, and development tools to succeed in work and life. They seek volunteer personal shoppers and stylists to work one-on-one with clients to select business-appropriate suits and outfits for interviews.
I Support the Girls - Help provide bras & menstrual hygiene products for girls & women experiencing homelessness. Volunteer opportunities include sorting, working in the warehouse, admin assistance, and social media.
Jewish Social Service Agency - The Jewish Social Service Agency is looking for volunteers to make phone calls to the elderly population they serve, to talk with them, and provide some company (they usually do house visits).
Mobility Networks - This organization is looking for bilingual volunteer drivers willing to help local non-English speaking elderly and disabled residents who must undergo life-sustaining treatments: dialysis, chemotherapy/radiation, physical therapy, brain injury therapy, and water therapy. Any languages are welcome.
N Street Village - N Street Village supports women experiencing homelessness in Washington, D.C. by offering a broad spectrum of services, housing, and advocacy in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington, DC - Assist families of the Greater Washington, DC area dealing with childhood illness and help ease the hardship of these children’s illness on families through programs that directly improve the health and wellbeing of children.
RSVP - RSVP improves the lives of vulnerable populations in the local community by focusing on education and wellness and by supporting nonprofits through skill-based volunteer programs.
United Way of the National Capital Area - Help the United Way NCA to improve the health, education and economic opportunity of every person in our community.
We Are Family Senior Outreach - We Are Family mobilizes a committed corps of volunteers to reach out to isolated inner-city seniors with free services, advocacy, and companionship, building a network of caring eyes and ears that enables at-risk seniors to age in place. Get involved by delivering groceries or visiting seniors in DC.
Young Mothers - Young Mothers, Inc's. mission is educating, mentoring, nurturing and supporting young mothers to become self-sufficient for themselves and their families.
ANIMALS
City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue - City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is a "rescue" not a "shelter." CDCK rescues adoptable cats and dogs in overcrowded and high-kill shelters, where resources are severely limited. As an almost completely volunteer-powered rescue, our volunteers are essential in saving the lives of cats and dogs.
Humane Rescue Alliance (Washington Humane Society) - HRA is the largest animal services provider in our region – touching the lives of tens of thousands of animals annually through direct rescue, care, and community-based services. Our teams find solutions to both small and big problems, from providing direct care to an animal in crisis to tackling systemic barriers to affordable, pet-friendly housing.
Lucky Dog Animal Rescue - Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is a volunteer-powered, foster-based, nonprofit animal rescue. If you have a passion for animals and would like to help save lives, consider signing up for one of their many opportunities.
GROCERIES/MEALS
Bread for the City - Volunteer as part of Bread for the City’s COVID-19 emergency response at their NW or SE Centers in DC. Sign up for a morning or afternoon shift in food distribution, clothing, or baby boutique.
Capital Area Food Bank - Capital Area Food Bank is in critical need of volunteers to help sort and pack food in their warehouse and assist at their offsite food distributions.
Food and Friends DC - Food and Friends are in urgent need of extra volunteers throughout the coming weeks. There are two volunteer opportunities: 1) food preparation and packaging and 2) meal and grocery delivery
Martha’s Table - Martha’s Table regularly looks for volunteers to fulfill the 400% spike in need in the DC community. Volunteers will collectively help distribute groceries to 8,000+ neighbors each week. To register to volunteer, visit their calendar and sign up for a shift that works for your schedule.
Meals on Wheels - There is an increased need for on-call volunteers to continue meal service to our neighbors who depend on us; this is an excellent way for healthy individuals to help your community during a difficult time. Shifts take about an hour between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm on weekdays.
Miriam’s Kitchen - Miriam's Kitchen mission is to end chronic homelessness in DC by providing healthy meals, basic social services, street outreach, permanent housing support, and advocating for systems change. Volunteers support by working in the kitchen and dining room, prep coffee, and assist with guest services.
So Others Might Eat (SOME) - SOME seeks to help community members experiencing homelessness and needs volunteers to work fundraiser events, provide specialized services, and assist with administrative matters.
Thrive DC – This organization seeks to provide services to people experiencing homelessness. Volunteer by unloading trucks or distributing bagged meals to clients.
KIDS/MENTORING
After School Kids Program (ASK) - The After School Kids (ASK) Program serves at-potential teens in the DC metropolitan area who are making positive strides in their lives and to be catalysts for change in their community. Volunteer to tutor court-involved and court-diverted youth.
Hopecam - Hopecam is a service that gives virtual visits to sick children who cannot have regular visitors because they are immunocompromised. There are short term and long term remote volunteer opportunities.
InfiniteFamily - Become a video mentor by providing black South African mentees with an ongoing, “face-to-face” guide through a turbulent and often isolated period of their lives to a broader vision of their capabilities and the world; 30 minutes/week, 1-year minimum commitment.
MicroMentor - Volunteer as a mentor and make a meaningful connection with a business owner. Mentors join, search for entrepreneurs to assist online, and serve as a coach and trusted guide once connected. You set the schedule and the expectations with your mentee.
Volo City Foundation - This organization is looking for volunteer coaches, field managers, photographers, event volunteers, and social media ambassadors for youth sports.
TRANSLATION & TRANSCRIPTION
Audiopedia - A free and open resource of localized expert audio content tailored to rural women’s needs, needs help with translation, art/design, fundraising, and communications/outreach.
Learning Ally - This organization empowers dyslexic, blind, and visually impaired students to succeed in school. Support Learning Ally’s mission to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to learn by applying for one of the following options:
Authentic voice narrator - They are casting voices for African-American, Latinx, and other culturally diverse stories that need authentic voices.
Professional audiobook narrator - They are looking for experienced audiobook narrators who can narrate juvenile fiction or textbooks.
Spanish narrator - They also need narrators fluent in Spanish and English who can read Spanish language textbooks.
Smithsonian Digital Volunteers - Transcribe historical documents and collection records to facilitate research and make content more accessible.
Translators Without Borders - Volunteer TO contribute to a range of language-related projects, including translation, revision, subtitling, and voice-over. You could help provide information about vital topics, such as health, financial inclusion, forced displacement, and climate change.
Language Volunteers must be fluent in at least one language (other than your native language); prior translation experience is a plus, though not necessary.
Non-Translator Volunteers are also accepted.
SAFETY & CRISIS SUPPORT
Chicktime DC - This organization provides a community for women to use their talents to spend time with children recovering from neglect/abuse.
Crisis Text Line - Become a Crisis Counselor and answer texts from people in crisis, bringing them from a hot moment to a cool calm through active listening, collaborative problem solving, and safety planning.
District Alliance for Safe Housing (DASH) - This organization provides safe housing for domestic and sexual violence victims and needs virtual volunteers to assist with social media and tutoring.
DOROT - DOROT is a nonprofit organization addressing the challenges of an aging population; social isolation and loneliness are public health risks that affect a significant portion of the older adult population. Connect with older adults to form friendships, create intergenerational bonds and provide support.
The Trevor Project - The Trevor Project is a nonprofit organization focused on suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ youth. Crisis counselors are trained to answer calls, chats, or texts from LGBTQ young people who reach out on our free, confidential and secure 24/7 service when they are. As a volunteer you are on the front lines; working one on one with LGBTQ young people to help them navigate tough times and to prevent suicide. As a trained Trevor counselor, you’ll remotely support LGBTQ young people struggling with issues such as coming out, LGBTQ identity, depression, and suicide either by phone or text & chat.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
Hire Heroes USA - Help generate job opportunities for US military veterans and their spouses by helping with mock interviews, career counseling, or providing guidance on job searches, preparing resumes, and filling out applications.
Operation Gratitude - Say “thank you” to our deployed troops and first responders by volunteering virtually at home. You can provide support by writing letters, knitting, crocheting, and sewing items, or making paracord bracelets that you can ship.
Soldiers’ Angels - Support our troops virtually in a variety of ways. Watch a video tutorial and learn how to make a medical mask to supply the VA hospitals. Pick up a pen and greeting card and write a note of support for deployed service members and veterans. Learn to make no-sew blankets; it’s surprisingly easy!
OUTDOORS
Cultivate the City – Get involved with one of many local community gardens and contribute to sustainable urban agriculture!
DC Department of Parks and Recreation - Help provide quality urban recreation and leisure services for residents and visitors to the District of Columbia.
Dumbarton Oaks Park Conservancy - Help to restore one of the United States of America's ten greatest garden landscape designs, the 27-acre Dumbarton Oaks Park (the Park), formerly part of the Dumbarton Oaks estate in Georgetown, Washington, DC.
Kingman + Heritage Islands Anacostia Green Boats - Help clean up the Anacostia River by kayak (May-October, weekends at high tide).
National Park Service - Volunteers support the National Park Service in its mission to preserve and protect our national parks. You can volunteer for a day or year-round; on your own or with friends and family; close to home or at a dream destination. Volunteer opportunities are available nationwide including in U.S. Territories.
Ward 8 Woods Conservancy - Ward 8 Woods engages residents and visitors to help clean up the woods in Washington DC's Ward 8 by cleaning up park land, removing trash, and cutting invasive vines.

Georgetown Community Engagement
At Georgetown, you’ll be part of a community that has valued social justice and service for centuries. “Contemplation in Action” is in our DNA and grounded in the Jesuit tradition of people for others. Mentor young students in DC, offer pro bono legal services, care for the sick at a clinic. You’ll find more than 100 university-sponsored service opportunities at Georgetown that engage students in addressing some of today’s most pressing issues.

Center for Social Justice: Center for Social Justice is home to several staff-run programs and over 40 student organizations, which are committed to advancing social justice in diverse fields, including education, juvenile justice, support for immigrant communities, hunger, and homelessness.
Office of Community Engagement: The office supports the university’s growth and economic development efforts, including master planning; facilitates and develops relationships with community organizations, local governments, and civic organizations; supports community-based research and scholarship; and strengthens the university’s partnership with our neighbors.
