Social Studies 10 | MSS--010
Social Studies 10 explores Canada’s development into an autonomous nation from the end of World War I to present day. You will learn about Canada’s contribution to World Wars, The Great Depression, and the Cold War. We will discover how global and regional conflicts have been a powerful force in shaping our contemporary world and identities. We will explore how the development of political institutions is influenced by economic, social, ideological, and geographic factors. Canada’s development has been filled with historical and contemporary injustices and they have led to Canada as an inclusive, multicultural society of today. We will examine how human-environmental interactions have led to global issues such as natural resources, climate change, and standards of living. Students completing Social Studies 10 will have a sense of their own place in Canada’s past and present, and their role in shaping the future.
Grade 11 and 12 Social Studies Courses
BC First Peoples 12 | MBCFP12
This course meets the Social Studies graduation requirement and is also a Grade 11 and 12 elective. This course also meets the graduation requirement of completing 4 credits in Indigenous-focused coursework. This course has been designed for all students, regardless of their cultural heritage or background. This course focuses on the diversity, depth, and integrity of the cultures of British Columbia’s First Peoples. The course provides an opportunity for BC students to acquire knowledge and understanding of the traditions, history, and present realities of BC First Peoples, both in the class and on participatory field trips. It provides a conceptual foundation for learners to develop an appreciation and respect for similarities and differences among the diverse Aboriginal cultures of the world. It also focuses on the experiences and perspectives of local First Nations and Métis, with the inclusion of guest speakers and cultural presentations by community members.
Explorations in Social Studies 11 | MEPSS11
This is a great course for your grade 11 year. Explorations in Social Studies 11 is a sampler to senior-level social studies courses, and gives students a well-rounded knowledge and mindset. This course will look at Law Studies, Social Justice, World History, Politics, Indigenous Studies, Comparative Cultures, Geography and Genocide Studies. Various platforms will be used including film primary and secondary resources, and YouTube Videos. Explorations will prepare students for senior social studies courses, as well as post-secondary programs where students need to be creative and independent thinkers who can articulate ideas, manage their time and be self-directed learners.
Genocide Studies 12 |MGEN012
This course will examine case studies of the intentional destruction of peoples and their cultures and explore how these movements can be disrupted and resisted. We will study the use of the term “genocide” to describe atrocities, exploring the political, legal, social, and cultural ramifications. We will come to understand that despite international commitments to prohibit genocide, violence targeted against groups of people or minorities has continued to challenge global peace and prosperity. While genocides are caused by and carried out for different reasons, all genocides share similarities in progression and scope. This course meets the SS 11/12 requirement and may also be used as a Grade 12 level course.
Law Studies 12 |MLST-12
Law Studies 12 This course will provide you with an understanding of the various types of law governing the legal rights and obligations of individuals and groups in our society. Students will also learn about the structure of the court system and observe cases. Units in this course include an introduction to law, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, criminal law, family law, torts and contract law. Topics of focus will be on areas of law that affect your life. Learning activities will include reading, case studies, research assignments, presentations and community resource speakers. This course meets the SS 11/12 requirement and may also be used as a Grade 12 level course.
20th Century History 12 | MWH-12
This course seeks to place our world in context. While learning the historical process of research and analysis, we seek to explore the turmoil, tragedy and triumph of the 20th Century. Big ideas include nationalist movements that unite people or lead to intense conflict, the rapid development of technology that led to profound social, economic and political changes, and the breakdown of longstanding empires which created new economic and political systems. We explore the rise and rule of authoritarian regimes, civil wars, independence movements, and revolutions, as well as global conflicts, including WWII, and the Cold War. Some themes emerge from this era including differences between capitalism vs. communism, and democracy vs. dictatorships. This course meets the SS 11/12 requirement and may also be used as a Grade 12 level course.
Physical Geography 12 | MPGEO12
Physical Geography 12 Geography is a discipline that integrates multiple subjects and addresses both the physical and human created systems of the world in the study of people, places and environments. As the ever increasing world population puts more and more demands on the planet’s resources, there is a need for a society that is geographically literate and therefore able to make informed decisions about the sustainability of the earth’s resources and the future of the planet. Students in this assignment and project-based course will have the opportunity to expand their understanding of how geography happens! This course meets the SS 11/12 requirement and may also be used as a Grade 12 level course.
Philosophy 12 | MPHIL12
Philosophy will make you question everything, even your own being! Philosophy is a discipline that examines the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. Philosophy allows people to question their assumptions and better understand their own beliefs. From great thinkers in their own time, to modern philosophers, the course will engage the mind and challenge students to explore concepts, theories, and ideologies.

Political Studies 12 | MPLST12
How can citizens make a difference in Kamloops? In B.C.? In Canada or the World? How can teenagers make a difference? Students who choose to take Political Studies will learn how political action occurs locally and around the world. They will examine contemporary and historical examples of political power and explore how ideologies, systems of government, political institutions, culture, and other factors lead to a huge range of political, economic, and social outcomes. Ultimately, students will become informed and engaged citizens, will empower themselves, and will learn how to influence change in their own community. Many political views will be discussed together and explored individually, including a broad range of Indigenous, local, regional, national, and global perspectives and forms of government. This course meets the SS 11/12 requirement and may also be used as a Grade 12 level course.
