Dance Academy Program at Brock Secondary
Brock Secondary's Dance Academy Program is able to accommodate all levels of dancers - no previous dance experience is required. This is a performance based course and students will be expected to perform. Attendance to rehearsal weeks prior to performing is mandatory.
Our Dance Academy is in one block in one semester, so students have Dance each day. Dance can be taken in grades 8 and 9 in place of a regular PHE block. In grades 10, 11 and 12, Dance can count as an Arts credit toward a student's Graduation program.
The academy focuses on four main styles of dance (Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical and Hip Hop). Our Academy teacher is trained in ballet and contemporary, and will also ensure a diverse experience by hiring instructors from outside agencies.
Students can expect 1-2 classes per week dedicated to strength and conditioning. As well, students will have the opportunity to experience how dance is an important part of many cultures around the world through folk-style dances.
Dance Academy students will learn 3-4 group dances and potentially some small group and solo dances to be performed at several different events hosted by the school.Â
Equipment: Students will be required to dress appropriately for flexible movement based on the style being learned in that class.
Ballet/Jazz/Lyrical: NO JEANS. Acceptable attire: yoga pants, sweatpants, bare feet/socks/dance shoes or grip socks and a comfortable shirt
Hip-Hop: NO SLIDES/SANDALS. Appropriate footwear is essential for hip-hop. Runners or shoes that do not slide on and off easily. Loose clothing or the same clothes as ballet/lyrical/jazz.
Grade of Students Involved: Grades 8 to 12
Cost: $250 to cover costs of additional dance instructors to support other genres of dance.
Note: Dance Academy is one block in one semester. Students have Dance each day.
