Art Studio 10 - Art Foundations | MVAST10
Recommendation: A keen interest in Art
Art Studio 10 emphasizes learning through practice. This course builds on what students know and introduces them to new ideas, materials, processes, and technical skills. Students become familiar with the elements and principles of art and design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of mediums, techniques and styles. Students will demonstrate active engagement in creating artistic works and resolving creative challenges. The materials and themes encourage individuals to develop their own styles and to appreciate art. In addition, student artists will maintain a sketchbook for idea development.

Photography 10 | MVAPH10
This course is an introduction to photography, from photograms to film and beyond. Students will build pinhole cameras and learn to develop black-and-white photos using traditional darkroom techniques. Students will also learn some introductory techniques of digital imaging. Recommended: A 35mm camera (second-hand camera can be purchased locally) and a digital camera. School cameras are also available on a sign-out basis.
Theatre Company (Drama) - 10
Drama 10: Theatre Company | MDRTC10
Take the stage in Drama 10! This course continues to use games, dynamic role-play, and dramatic elements to engage audiences. Drama 10 introduces students to the exciting world of theatrical performance! Students often create performances for school assemblies and audiences as production procedures continue to be learned. This is a group project-based course that provides students with incredible opportunities for personal growth and the development of core competencies with such learned skills as time management, collaboration, problem-solving and conflict resolution. This course will prepare you for Theatre Production 11 and 12.
Music - 10
Choir 10 | MMUCC10
No previous experience is needed to join the choir. Remember: If you can speak, you can sing! Students in this course will develop the basic elements of choral performance. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is required. Performances occur during school hours, and in the evenings and often take place away from the school. There is also the possibility of retreats and cultural and performing trips. This is an active group of students who have a lot of fun - Come on out and join the choir!
Techniques & Content Covered:
· Vocal production, tone, articulation;
· Elements of stage presence;
· Various styles of music from classical to contemporary and modern music;
· Music from many different cultures Introduction to music reading skills; and
· Basic musicianship in an ensemble.
Enhancement Fee: There is an enhancement fee of $15.00 to cover music and an accompanist
Beginner Band 10 | MMUCB10-BB
Have you always wanted to learn to play an instrument?
This is the class for you. Zero experience required. You will explore the wonderful language of music and receive many chances to perform as a group. Some instruments you may choose to learn include, but are not limited to: Flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, tuba, and percussion. In addition, you will learn to compose some of your own music through improvisation and written notation.
At times you will be asked to compose utilizing a music composition program, and some students will even have their compositions
performed at concerts! Instrument rental fees from the school district (managed through Brock Middle School) are $100 / year. You may provide your own instrument after consultation with Mr. Schill. Please speak with Mr. Schill regarding possible financial assistance. Every student deserves to be in band.

Advanced Band 10 - 12 |MMUCB10
Advanced Band is for students with mastery of the Intermediate Band outcomes, or successful audition. Concerts, festivals, retreats, trips and other performances may occur in the evenings and sometimes take place away from the school. You do not need to own an instrument to participate in band class. Instruments can be rented from the school for a minimal fee. All students are welcome. Remember: Making music makes you smarter!
Skills & Techniques Covered:
Continuation of acquisition of skills on woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.
Elements of music include: sight-reading, terminology, rhythm, melody, dynamics, harmony, musical notation, articulation, phrasing, posture, intonation, balance and blend.
Music history and literature.
Ensemble and performance skills.
Music leadership skills.
In addition, you will learn to compose some of your own music.
You do not need to own your instrument to participate in band class. One can be rented from the school for $100/school year. Please speak with Mr. Schill regarding possible financial assistance. You may provide your own instrument after consultation with Mr. Schill.
Jazz Band 10 | MMUJB10
Prerequisite: Previous 1 year concert band experience
Co-requisite: Concert Band (teacher consent for special exceptions)
Note: You must be take Band 10 in order to be part of Jazz Band.
This is an off-timetable course: This is a linear course which runs outside of the timetable. Instrument choices are saxophone, trumpet, trombone, bass, piano, or drum set, and students must have previous experience on their instrument. This course is an additional 9th course.
This is a performance enrichment course for students who have had solid success on their instrument in previous concert band classes. It is designed to introduce students to concepts of commercial musical styles including Swing, Jazz, Rock, Latin, Dixieland, and Jazz Ballads. Students will also develop improvisation skills (creating a solo over a set chord progression). Students must be registered in Concert Band in the same school year (exceptions will only be made with the teacher’s consent).
*Special Note: If high enrollment allows, Jr. and Sr. Jazz Band classes will run as two separate courses. If there is one ensemble, enrollment will be capped according to proper jazz band instrumentation, and senior students will be given enrollment priority.
Guitar 10 -12 |MMUGT10
This course is offered to students with little to no experience playing the guitar. You will learn the basics: chords, note reading, tab reading, theory and technique. You will learn to play several classic guitar songs, as well as other songs of your own choice. You will be amazed at what you can learn in just a few short months! Students must provide their own acoustic guitar. Affordable rentals are available through Long and McQuade in Kamloops.
