Hockey Academy Programs at Brock Secondary
Our hockey program allows students to develop hockey skills as well as develop skills for lifelong learning. This is not a “learn to skate” program, and the focus is on individual skill development. As such, students must participate in some level of Minor Hockey (House or Rep). The outcomes for Physical Health Education are met in this course and the provincial mandate to encourage healthy lifestyles is pursued. Fitness, Nutrition, Leadership and Hockey Skill Development are some of the components of this course. Our program is a linear program, where students take one block of hockey every day.
Cost: $350 – covers the cost of additional coaches to support the teacher on the ice, as well as academy equipment such as pucks, shooter tutors, etc. Note: Students walk to the arena from Brock Secondary and back. (Transportation is not provided.)
A minimum of $150 is due April 15th while the remainder is due by the end of September. Students will be reprogrammed if fees are not paid in full by the end of September.
Equipment: Students are responsible for providing their own CSA-approved equipment and are also responsible for ensuring their equipment is brought to and from the Brocklehurst Arena (which is where the academy takes place).
Grade of Students Involved: Grades 8 to 12
The grouping of academy students will depend upon the number of students who apply to the Hockey Academy. We work to create a Junior Hockey Academy for grades 8 and 9 students and a Senior Hockey Academy for grades 10 , 11 and 12 students. Groups are not ability-placed as the goal of this program is skill development.
Placement into the Academy is based on cohort sizes, class size and composition, and Crosby Dorais's experience. Again, this is an individual skill development program. Academy programs are capped at 24 students.
Design of Our Hockey Academy Program: Our Hockey Academy is linear in nature, but is programmed within a semester system. Students have 1 block of Hockey Academy every day. Students must enroll in 1 block of Hockey Academy in each semester. This enables students the flexibility to take all their Ministry-required and elective courses in a regular semester program.
Students are responsible for walking to the Brock arena. When Hockey Academy blocks fall during the first 3 blocks of the day, students are responsible for walking to the arena, be dressed in hockey equipment and being on time for regular class start time. This will require that students walk to the arena in the morning by 8:00am, during Break time and during Lunch hour. Parents/Guardians must drop off equipment at the arena in the morning. When Hockey Academy falls on the last block of the day, students will remain at Brock Secondary and complete dry land training with Crosby Dorais in the Gym and Weight room.
Note: Students must take 2 blocks of Hockey over the full year - with one block in each semester.
Application process: Current Brock students have the option to return to the Hockey Academy. Those students can indicate their desire to return through our course selection process. Students and families for NEW APPLICANTS must apply to the program using our online application process - (https://bit.ly/BrockAcademy). If a student is applying from another school within SD73, families must complete and submit a transfer request form. A transfer request form can be picked up at a student's current school, and it must be signed by the current school Principal.
All new students will be selected based on suitability to the program (an interview process may take place).
All Hockey Academy students must:
Be in grades 8 - 12.
Must have the ability to balance a full-time education program with a skill development program.
Walk to Brock arena and be dressed in hockey equipment and be on time for regular class start time.
Walk from Brock arena to Brocklehurst Secondary and arrive on time for class start time.
