PHE 8 is a co-ed class. Physical and Health Education (PHE) is a compulsory course designed to develop educated citizens who have the knowledge, skills, and understandings they need to be safe, active, and healthy citizens throughout their lives. PHE curriculum focuses on competencies that support life-long learning— competencies that can contribute to personal lives and career aspirations. A focus will be on daily participation in different types of physical activities that influence our physical literacy and personal health and fitness goals and how lifelong participation in physical activity has many benefits and is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. PHE classes will have an emphasis on fundamental skill development in a variety of sports. An introduction to the value of fitness and methodology to develop and maintain physical conditioning will be taught. Students will reflect on how healthy choices influence our physical, emotional, and mental well-being with an emphasis on the consequences of bullying, stereotyping, and discrimination.
This is a mandatory course as outlined by BC's Curriculum.

Physical and Health Education 10 | MPHE-010
Students will participate in a wide variety of activities including team, individual, and lifetime sports. There are expectations of continuing development of physical abilities, students' responsibility, and leadership skills. Students will also focus on various health and active living topics regarding mental and physical health. This course is required for graduation.
This is a mandatory course as outlined by BC's Curriculum. It is a graduation requirement.
Fit for Life 9-10 | MPHE-09FFL | MPHED10FL
This course is an alternative to regular PE and is designed to encourage students to become more physically active and fit through activities that they can continue to do throughout their lives while learning to be healthy individuals. The types of physical activities we may participate in might include: walking, running, hiking, aerobic activity, stretch and relaxation training, circuit, weight training and class games. There will also be lessons on well-being, nutrition, responding to basic emergencies, strategies to protect students from harm in a variety of settings, and influencing healthy relationships.
Active Living 11 & 12 | (formerly known as PHE 11) MACLV11 & MCLV12
This course will cover a large range of sports and activities. Emphasis will be placed on lifetime sports and fitness. Students in PHE will be evaluated on movement, fitness, knowledge, leadership, fair play, and participation. Evaluation takes place on a daily basis and, therefore, regular attendance and participation are mandatory.
Fitness and Conditioning 11 & 12 | MFTCD11 & MFTCD12
The purpose of these courses is to explore how the understanding of motor movements and body mechanics translate into the practical application of correct training methods leading to an increase in physical abilities and confidence. These courses will offer students the skills, knowledge and attitude to incorporate various types of weight training and active health into their personal lifestyle. The courses will be designed by front-loading with theoretical concepts, covering important components of training, anatomy, and health, which will translate into practical applications over the course of the semester. Note: Proper P.E. clothing includes non-marking shoes, socks, athletic shorts or sweats, and a clean T-shirt, all of which must be different from those worn in other classes.
Human Performance 11 | MFTCD11-HP
This course is for students wishing to improve their fitness potential through a structured fitness program. Students will participate in a broad range of fitness activities including weight training, circuit training and plyometrics. The course goal is to create positive attitudes from personal achievement and maximizing your potential. High-performance training will focus on the areas of strength, power, flexibility, agility, endurance, and body composition. Other components of the course will be:

Human Performance 12 | MFTCD12-HP
This course is for the more focused, self-motivated, and elite student-athletes interested in taking their athletic performance to the next level. Student will take their goals from health-related to performance-related by training with specific, physical, mental, and emotional techniques, and strategies. Students will learn more about the physiology of their bodies and prepare themselves for possible participation in higher-level and/or post-secondary athletics. Training will be in the areas of Speed and Agility, Strength and Power, Aerobic and Anaerobic Conditioning, Sports Nutrition, and Mental Training. This course will also include enrichment activities which will take place in various venues throughout the community. A strong commitment and regular attendance are required for anyone taking this course.

Rugby Skills 11 | YLRA-1E
Students will investigate five big ideas involved in developing fitness and skills for rugby:

Experience playing rugby is not a requirement, but students will be expected to participate in a variety of full-contact scenarios including tackling. This is a BAA course.

Rugby Skills 12 | YLRA-2E
Students will develop their abilities beyond the expectations of Rugby Skills 11 for the development of leadership, including coaching and officiating. Students investigate five big ideas:
Promoting safety in a collision sport like rugby requires special attention to key technical skills.
Knowing how our bodies move and function helps us with the identification and rehabilitation of injuries.
Designing a customized nutrition plan can help us reach our health and fitness goals.
A deeper understanding of rugby laws and strategy can help us prepare for positions of leadership.
Referee and/or coaching certifications through the NCCP and World Rugby are available with additional fees.
Prerequisite: Rugby Skills 11 (YLRA-1E).

Sports Specific Training 11: Basketball | YHRA-1DSST
This course should only be taken once as you cannot obtain another 4 credits for this course.
Sports Specific Training is an in-depth course designed to give students a focused level of training through drills, fundamentals, plyometrics and experience in specific sports, namely basketball. The focus of this course is to build on the fundamentals and expand into various aspects such as plyometric training for speed, agility and jumping ability, as well as learning how to "think the game", while learning a variety of team offences, defenses, presses, set plays, and more. There is a course fee to support field trips to expand basketball skills and agility.
