Grade 8 Mosaic Rotation
All Grade 8 students will take an Elective Rotation that introduces students to multiple elective courses. The ADST Mosaic rotation could include up to 4 of the following that are listed. (These courses cover the mandatory Ministry requirements for Applied Design, Skills and Technologies 8 and Careers 8. All grade 8 students must take the ADST Rotation.) Students rotate through each course every 4 weeks for one semester.
ADST Mosaic Rotation - Foods 8 | MADFS08
Foods Studies 8 is a practical course where students learn about kitchen safety, food safety and measurement. The food preparation skills they learn will help students throughout their lifetime. Students will be able to make a variety of foods such as vegetable soup, apple crisp and pizza, that they will enjoy.

ADST Mosaic Rotation - Metalwork 8 | MADM-08
This course is an introductory level course that allows students to learn basic hand tools in order to explore a variety of ways of shaping and processing metal. There is a large emphasis on safety in the metal shop and student evaluation will be based on completed projects.

ADST Mosaic Rotation - Tech 8 |
This course will provide students with a foundation in technology and design. Students will learn the fundamental principles of technology, workshop safety, and basic tool usage. Through hands-on projects, students will explore the design process by tackling various challenges using equipment such as 3D printing and Laser Cutting. The course will also look at Drafting, Robotics, Electronics and Power Technology. This course lays the groundwork for more advanced concepts in Grade 9 ADST courses, encouraging students to develop essential skills, creativity, and an understanding of how to use and apply the design process.

ADST Mosaic Rotation - Wood 8 |
This course will allow students to develop and demonstrate the correct safety and work skills required to complete basic operations in the workshop. Students will complete a number of predetermined projects. All projects will have an element of self-creativity and inventiveness. There will be many opportunities in this course for self-generated design
ADST Mosaic Rotation - Careers 8 | MCE--08
Welcome to Careers 8! In this course, students will have the opportunity to examine their personal skills and strengths and how these can be used when exploring possible career choices. Through the course, students will work collaboratively and independently developing their thinking and communication skills, learning to solve problems in innovative ways, and reflecting upon their growth as individuals. Additionally, students in this course will have the opportunity to engage in volunteer opportunities that will broaden their career options and deepen their community connections.

Food Studies 9 | MADFS09
Foods Studies 9 is an exciting practical course with an emphasis on helping students understand the significance of food, the principles of nutrition, and the relationship to your health and well-being. Students will enjoy nutritious soups, macaroni and cheese, calzones, and quinoa bowls to name a few tasty foods. You will prepare many kinds of foods and learn a variety of food preparation skills that will help you throughout your lifetime.

Textiles 9 | MADT09SEW
This course is treated as a beginner sewing course. Students will start with a basic hand sewing project and then learn or relearn how to use and care for the sewing machines at the beginning of the course. From there, students will learn the following skills through a variety of projects:
The differences between woven and knit fabrics
Reading instructions and using patterns
sizing and measuring to make garments that fit properly
Elements of design and how they relate to fashion
Using a fashion croquis to draw designs
The difference between recycled clothing and up-cycling clothing and the impacts discarded textiles have on our earth
The role textiles play from a cultural perspective

Computer Programming and Coding 9 | MADIT09COM
Technology exists in every aspect of our daily lives today. Choosing computer science/ programming as your area of study is a choice that will change your life and open a world of opportunities in the job sector. This introductory computer programming course will equip students with the fundamental concepts and skills necessary to understand and create basic computer programs. Students will learn to think computationally, develop problem-solving and algorithmic thinking, and translate real-world problems into executable code. Students will learn beginner-friendly programming languages (e.g., Python, Block-based coding, HTML) through basic programming constructs like variables, data types, operators, control ow (if/else, loops), and functions. Students will also be introduced to artificial intelligence and their growing impact on our everyday lives. This will be a project-based course.
Computer Design and Animation 9 | MADIT09G
This course introduces students to the world of 3D computer graphics through the accessible medium of Voxel Art (3D pixels). Using the industry-standard tool MagicaVoxel, students will transition from 2D thinking to 3D spatial reasoning. The curriculum covers the entire 3D pipeline; modelling (building), texturing (painting), lighting/rendering (photography), and animation (movement). By the end of the course, student will create their own animated 3D assets suitable for video games, social media, or digital portfolios.

Electronics and Robotics 9 | MADER09
During this course, students embark on an exciting journey into the world of electronic theory and practice. This course centers on hands-on learning in an electronics lab, where students explore the fundamentals of electronics components and basic circuits. They'll drive into the world of introductory robotics, where they'll work with programmable microcontrollers, including Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Foundational electronic theory is seamlessly integrated into the "hands-on" learning experience, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of electronics. Safety remains a top priority throughout the course, ensuring students develop their skills in a secure and controlled environment.

Digital Photography 9 | MADMA09-DP
Digital Photo 9 is a beginner course designed for students interested in learning how to effectively use a digital camera. During this class students will learn these skills through a variety of assignments and projects:
The history of photography and the significance of the processes
How to critically analyze photography, including their own images
Compositional elements
The basic operations and functions of a variety of digital cameras
Light and the importance of the exposure triangle
How creatively manage and or alter digital images using photoshop

Drafting and Design 9 | MADD-09
In this introductory course, students embark on a journey of creative problem-solving with a primary focus on technical illustration. They will acquire a foundational set of technical skills that are essential for designers to effectively communicate ideas and design solutions through technical drawings that include perspective, mechanical and architectural drafting styles and virtual creations. As a part of this course, students will have the exciting opportunity to delve into 3D solid modelling and bring their designs to life using a 3D printer.
Fly Fishing 9 | MADGE09FF
During this course, you will learn to create a variety of flies, from “Ice OFF to Ice ON”, increase your knowledge and appreciation of the environment, and gain an understanding of lake topography and lake science. Fly-tying tools will be provided for use during the course. *If you have your own fly-tying tools, you may bring them to use*

Metalwork 9 | MADM-09
Metal 9 is an inquiry-based course that introduces students to the fundamentals of working with metal. The course focuses on providing hands-on experience with basic metalworking tools and techniques, as well as developing a foundational understanding of metal properties and fabrication processes. Safety and competency will be emphasized throughout all projects and classwork.

Power Technology 9 | MADPT09
This is an introduction course for those students interested in taking Automotive Technology 11/12. This course examines different sources of power including wind, solar, electric, and internal and external combustion engines. The disassembly, inspection, and successful reassembly of small 2-stroke engines will help introduce the maintenance and basic operational theory of cars and the sources that power them. This is an ideal course for those students intending to pursue a career in mechanics, engineering, or automotive-related fields. Both theory and hands-on participation will count towards your final mark in this course and students are encouraged to ring in small motors from home to work on.

Technology Exploration - Engineering 9 | MADGE09MTE
Building upon the foundational knowledge acquired in Grade 8, this course introduces students to the exciting world of technology, design, and problem-solving. Students will engage in hands-on projects like designing and constructing small bridges or towers to test structural integrity, and exploring basic circuitry through simple electronic kits. This course emphasizes collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking as students tackle real-world challenges. Sustainability and ethical considerations are woven into all projects, setting the stage for advanced exploration in future courses.

Woodwork 9 | MADW-09
This course will allow students to develop and demonstrate the correct safety and work skills required to complete basic operations in the workshop. Students will complete a number of predetermined projects. All projects will have an element of self-creativity and inventiveness. There will be many opportunities in this course for self-generated design. Safety, creativity, and the development of self-confidence will be emphasized through project construction using power tools.

Yearbook 9 | MEN-09-YB
Yearbook is a semester-long class (second semester) that produces the school yearbook. Members of this class are expected to have a high level of maturity and the ability to work independently. Students will be responsible for the production, design, and publication of the school yearbook. Creating the yearbook is a fun process which includes learning the publication program and choosing the theme and all related artwork as well as taking all the photos using digital cameras. This a project-based course with real-world experiences and results.
