Logline - A girl is haunted by voices that she believes are in her head - until they’re not…
Synopsis - Waking up from a nightmare on the anniversary of her brother’s death, Lucy starts to hear voices when she sees a strange black figure in her room. As she goes about her day, the voices, which she believes are just in her head, get louder and louder until she realises that they may not be. Throughout the film, we also see the reoccuring numbers, 4/12, the date of her brother’s death. Culminating in the voices getting clear enough to be recognizable as her deceased brother’s voice, and finally saying something other than her name: “Ready or not”.

Intentions: We decided that we would focus mainly on one of the five senses, in this case, audio. I had a conversation with our scriptwriter to try and limit the amount of dialogue used. Seeing as we were making a psychological thriller, we wanted to incorporate some of the main tropes of the genre. One of the main tropes was mind games, which we employed by having the voices taunt her by appearing at seemingly random times of the day, without letting Lucy figure out why they were there in the first place. As a director, I had to make sure that our actress would be able to convey feelings of confusion and paranoia when the voices appeared, to show how they affected her.

Intentions: As the writer of the film, I wanted to make sure that the audience experienced feelings of suspense and anxiety, similar to the feelings of the main character Lucy. In order to do this I wanted to be sure to include a couple of key things. For example, having something to provide ‘the fear of the unknown’, in this case the ‘unknown’ were the voices Lucy was hearing. I also wanted to experiment with foreshadowing and motifs, therefore I incorporated significant recurring numbers (4 and 12) to not only have a role in the plot but also to remind the audience that something may occur - have them feel like something may happen but they just can’t identify what. Overall, I wanted to allow the audience to experience the fear of the unknown themselves and to understand the tones of suspense and anxiety throughout the film.

Intentions: As the editor and sound person of the film it was my job to make sure that the dialogue and scenes were spooky enough for the genre we were working in. To do this, I used quick cuts and dramatic sound elements to portray the feeling of unease, or unknowing. By enhancing the atmosphere and using techniques like colour grading and sound design, I was able to create a more spooky aura around the film and make it feel more horror-like. I collaborated with the director and videographer to ensure that the shots in the film matched the mood we wanted to create. For example, making sure the shots weren't too bright or contrasting with the scenes in the dark, so as to not create a jarring feel for the audience.
Lexi Angus is a tenth-grade film student with a passion for photography and cinematography. Lexi plans to continue with film
Intentions: As the cinematographer my goal was to create visually interesting shots that conveyed the unease of the character through to the viewer, through methods such as lighting, spacing and FOV. I wanted to play around with background and foreground to place highlight on certain images as well as leave large empty spaces within the shot to keep the viewer on edge.
