Location
In Durham you're among some of the world's finest architecture. A truly beautiful UNESCO heritage site city, where the famous castle and cathedral dominate the skyline. With a population of c. 43,000 Durham has a compact, friendly feel but still provides the facilities you would expect of a thriving city including a number of cafés, bars and restaurants. The River Wear winds its way through the city, providing plenty of green spaces between the historic city and our world class facilities.
Unique College System
Durham is a collegiate university with 17 colleges in Durham City. Joining a College is much like joining a new family. The Colleges offer a strong sense of community, provide pastoral care, support your developments and have sports, arts and social facilities.
A World-Leading University
Durham is a top 10 UK and a QS worldwide top 100 university. Many departments are thus academically world leading. Further, we an environment dedicated to delivering an unrivalled experience outside of your studies. 留学は、他では得難いエキサイティングな経験です。そして皆さんにはぜひここダラム大学で、教育と研究において国際的評価の高い世界トップ100にランクインする大学で学んでいただきたいと思います。本学は英国で最も歴史ある大学の一つ（大学の設立は1832年だが、ヘンリー8世の時代からダラム大聖堂のカレッジを設立する動きがあった）であり、ユネスコ世界遺産にも登録されています。実際、中には築1000年近い大学の城で生活している学生もいるほどです！
本学独自の「カレッジ制」は、強い帰属意識を生み出します。学生は全員、いずれかのカレッジに所属します。カレッジへの所属は、新しい家族に加わるような体験であるばかりでなく、学生生活を豊かにし、素晴らしい学業を支える卓越した機会を提供してくれます。

We are one of the UK's most historic universities and a UNESCO heritage site. Indeed, some students live in a university castle that is almost a thousand years old!

ダラム大学は、イングランド北東部にある歴史的な大聖堂の街ダラムに位置する、研究と教育が活発に行われているコミュニティです。この地域は、その魅力的な田園風景、海岸線、そして文化遺産で知られています。
ユネスコ世界遺産に登録されている壮大な大聖堂と城（キャッスル）のほかにも、この街には傑出した建造物群や美しい川岸があり、それらは数時間もあれば徒歩で見て回ることができます。
ダラムは、ロンドンやマンチェスターから電車で3時間、エディンバラから2時間、また、ニューカッスル国際空港とダラム・ティーズ・バレー空港という2つの地方空港からも1時間以内の距離にあります。
Durham University is a busy research and teaching community located in the historic cathedral city of Durham in the North-East of England, an area famed for its attractive countryside, coastline and cultural heritage.
As well as its magnificent Cathedral and Castle, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the city has other buildings of distinction and fine river banks which can be seen on foot in a few hours.
Durham is three hours by train from London and Manchester, two hours from Edinburgh, and less than one hour from two regional airports, Newcastle International and Durham Tees Valley.

多くの学生が、公共交通機関を利用して以下のような地域の散策も楽しんでいます。
100年以上前のヴィクトリア朝イングランドにタイムスリップさせてくれる野外博物館「ビーミッシュ（Beamish）」訪問。
1900年前にローマ帝国の荒々しい北西の辺境を守るために築かれた「ハドリアヌスの長城」沿いのウォーキング。
ノーサンバーランド（Northumberland）の砂浜でのサーフィンや、のんびりと過ごすこと。
そしてハリー・ポッターファンにとって、ダラム城とアニック城（Alnwick Castles）が映画のロケ地であり、ユニバーシティ・カレッジの城がホグワーツそっくりであることも、忘れてはならない魅力です！
Durham and North East England are amazingly vibrant places. The cities of Durham and Newcastle (just 12 minutes by train away) have a constantly changing series of festivals and events: from the Durham book festival, the Lumiere festival of light, to concerts and theatres.
Many students also explore the region on public transport including:
- visiting the open air Beamish museum, a place that will take you back 100+ years to Victorian England.
- walking along Hadrian's Wall built 1900 years ago to guard the wild north-west frontier of the Roman Empire
- surfing or chilling on the sandy Northumberland beaches.
And for the Harry Potter fans, who can forget that Durham and Alnwick Castles were filming locations and the University College castle looks like Hogwarts!

ダラムのグルメシーンは、非常に活気に満ちています。屋内市場では、ピーズ・プディング（その名前にだまされてはいけません。甘くはありません！）のような、より伝統的な郷土料理が提供されている一方、屋外のマーケット広場では、多くの地元の生産者や個人経営の店が商品を売るために集まります。
本場の体験をしたいのなら、アフタヌーンティーを提供しているカフェがたくさんあり、そこでジャムを添えた、まさに英国らしいスコーンを楽しむことができます。あるいは、「シンギング・ヒニー（Singing Hinnies）」を探してみてください。これは鉄板で焼くケーキやスコーンの一種で、「ヒニー（Hinny）」とは北東部の方言で、若い女性や子供に対して使われることの多い愛情のこもった呼び方です。「シンギング（singing）」と形容されているのは、バターをたっぷり使った生地を熱い鉄板で焼くときに立てるジュージューという音が歌っているように聞こえるからだとか。
少しホームシックになっても、街にはアジアンスーパーマーケットもありますのでご安心ください！
Durham has a vibrant food scene. While the indoor covered market may offer more traditional local food, such as Pease Pudding (don't be fooled by the name — it is not sweet!), the outdoor market square welcomes many local and independent producers to sell their goods.
For a true local experience, there are many cafes offering afternoon teas, where you can enjoy a very British scone with jam. Alternatively look out for Singing Hinnies, which are a kind of griddled cake or scone (Hinny is a term of endearment in the North East dialect, often applied to young women and children. The singing refers to the sounds of the sizzling of the butter in the rich dough as it is cooked on a hot plate).
Anyone feeling a little homesick can also be assured that the city also has Asian supermarkets!
