In my presentation, I talked about the meaning of Xenophobia, The survey in 2007, the background of Japanese closed and xenophobic society, online right wingers, the relationship between Japan and East Asian countries, some foreigners’ concern and my discussion question, how do my audiences think about Japanese closed society and how Japanese face with foreigners, especially with Japanese neighborhoods.
Xenophobia is unfamiliar word for us, so I think it was useful for me to do vocabulary work, because it made easy to explain xenophobia, to know what kind of word use with xenophobia, such as extremism or racism.
Secondly, I talked about the change of the target of Japanese’s afraid, many accommodations concerned about foreigners’ cultures not only language. And in recent years, the aim is changing to other East Asian countries. It is new Japanese xenophobic situation. It includes neighborhoods of Japan, and our historical and territorial issue.
And we talked about the solution of accepting foreign tourists. When I research about the survey in 2007, I found a research about foreign tourist who came to Japanese sightseeing area, such as Kamakura, Kyoto and my home town Kanazawa. Many Japanese Information prepared English maps, but many foreigners want English-Japanese maps and information about wi-fi spot, these gaps between demands and supply are important to understand each culture, we thought.
At last, we talked about some resolution and today’s situation, especially nationality issues. Japanese law about nationality is very strict, I think. So, Nationality Act has a part of responsibility for some of recent xenophobic situations in Japan. Certainly the Nationality Act is important, because Japanese have fewer genetic commonality with each other, compare to other Asian. But we have to realize that many foreigners in and come to Japan. It’s a not good way to ignore that, I think.
