November 21st, 2025 - Volume 10
Dear Viking Families,
As we begin Thanksgiving Break, I can’t help but reflect on the gratitude I have and have seen this past month at VCE. We had our first wash, fold, box, and transport of our lost and found to a sister Leader In Me school in DeKalb County. Please see the pictures below. Our student action team worked with our parent lighthouse team to make this happen and I’m excited to continue this practice. The next trip of our lost and found items will be right before the holiday break in December so we will move the lost and found table outside our gym that final weekend before the last week of school. Please feel free to stop in and see if any of your child’s items are there before we make another donation.
Veteran’s Day and Bingo Night were two wildly successful events. Thanks to our PTO, our partnership with the middle school, and our community - the turnout was great and the connections made together to not only have fun together but also to celebrate our Veterans allowed our students to see gratitude in action. Our LSC met this past week and heard from Mike Evans, our FCS Chief Technology and Information Officer. He shared updates on all things technology including chromebooks, AI, security protocals, and ideas moving forward for streamlined communication. Please see any of our LSC members for more information. Our next LSC meeting will be December 11th and will feature Michele Dugan, FCS Director of Communications. All are invited to attend!
Please see information in the newsletter below about the new playground equipment- including the cost, the bids, and the process involved to select and purchase these items. Again, another example of your generosity at work. Our Viking Friday is going through a revamp this year. We are working to make it more authentic and to partner within the West Community to provide opportunities for our students to learn from older students. We will have more information about that in the coming weeks.
I wish for all of you a relaxing, enjoyable, holiday break. Whether you are traveling or staying home - I hope your time away from school provides opportunities for your child to rest, see family and friends, and live in that space of gratitude. Our next Voice will come out December 12th.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Elizabeth

I wanted to provide some background to the process of replacing playground equipment. Playground equipment for elementary schools is more expensive than most people expect because of the high standards for safety, durability and installation. Unlike equipment sold for home use, school playgrounds must follow strict national safety guidelines and be built to withstand heavy daily use for many years.
Safety – It must comply with ASTM F1487-25 (playground equipment intended for public use) and CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) guidelines. Equipment must be made with specialized materials that prevent injuries. The designs undergo testing to minimize fall hazards, entrapment risks and sharp edges. The equipment has specific fall zone areas that have required fall protection material (poured rubber, engineered wood fiber mulch or turf) around each piece of equipment, including swings.
Durability and Structural Integrity – Commercial-grade materials need to handle hundreds of children every week, year-round. This includes heavy-duty steel (welded, not bolted joints), reinforced plastics, weather-resistant coatings and parts that are still available in 15 years. This equipment also includes long warranties and maintenance requirements. The investment with higher upfront costs means the equipment should last for 15-20 years with lower long-term replacement and repair costs.
Installation – All contractors/vendors are required to provide proof of insurance and complete a contractor affidavit to do business in Forsyth County Schools. This is mandatory for any work, not just playground equipment. Site preparation including grading, drainage and concrete footings needs to be done by professional certified playground equipment installers. The major components typically have 10-50 year warranties and lifetime on some of the metal parts.
Selection of Equipment by the School - With playground equipment it is always hard to compare apples to apples. The lowest quote might not provide the best value or option. The school typically notes their criteria for choosing one over the other since it may or may not be the lowest quote. For example, the selection criteria could include the play capacity (number of students served), area (total play area gained), turn key items such as borders and/or play surface, or if a school already has a specific manufacturer’s playground components, the reasoning could be that they want the equipment to match.
When we began looking at different companies, we got three already approved vendors who have done work within our county. While all three had great product, ultimately, we had to think about timeline and cost. It was very important to us to be sure we could get student voice and get the pieces installed within the same school year as the Boosterthon.
Below are the quotes we received from all three companies:
Total before tax: $140,610 for 2 pieces
Total before tax: $70,528.03
Total before tax: $95,194.17 for 2 pieces
Ultimatately, we selected Play South for a few reasons.
They ran a Fall Special that provided what we were looking for - one larger piece for the 3-5 playground and one smaller piece, without a necessary fall zone for the K-2 playground.
This company provided Midway Elementary with their playground equipment, Haw Creek Elementary, and is currently working with Coal Mountain Elementary. All three principals shared with me that they were very happy with the customer service they received.
The students voted on these pieces!
Boosterthon raised a total of $63,000. We will pull the remaining $7.5k from the school budget. Again, thank you for your genorosity!
Each month you have the opportunity to nominate a staff member who embodies the habit we are focused on as a school. Please click the icon above or this link HERE.
