Conflict Management
This month, we are teaching/reviewing Kelso’s Choices, a problem-solving program that gives students simple, practical tools for handling everyday conflicts independently. The goal is to help students recognize the difference between a small problem they can try to solve and a BIG problem that requires adult help.
Parents can help make these lessons stick by using the same language throughout the day: “Is this a small problem or a BIG problem?” “What choices have you tried?” and “Choose 2 and diffuse!” By consistently encouraging students to “Try 2 before coming to you,” Kelso’s Choices can also help reduce tattling and frequent requests for adult intervention with small problems. This will help our leaders build independence, confidence, and lifelong problem-solving skills.
