January 9th, 2026 - Volume 11
Dear Viking Families,
Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday break and that this first week back at school has been smooth as we transition into a new year. As we step into January 2026, together we will lead our efforts to sustain our community focused on igniting the joy of learning and inspiring leaders. This is both our motto and mission and one that greatly impacts our decisions as a school. We are excited to kick off a new beginning!
We returned to having our playground equipment installation begin on Monday, January 5th. Progress pictures are included below. While the process has taken longer than anticipated due to layers upon layers of mulch that had turned to mud underneath, Monday we will be able to return! In the meantime, students have still enjoyed recess and the opportunity to run around in our bus lane and upper field. We know how important play is for student development.
We are celebrating some exciting data during this halftime reflection! Our CCRPI scores were recently released along with our iReady Winter Screening results. Details are in the newsletter below. Our students are making gains worth noting. We are on track to reach our goals for the year, and it all begins with your child understanding their WIG (Wildly Important Goal) and the impact it has on their class, grade, and school. This weekend, ask your child about their WIG and what they are focusing on to start 2026. Your involvement in these conversations helps them practice sharing their goals and think deeply about the action steps needed to accomplish them.
The next few months are full of opportunities to get involved: our Family Dance, Spring Fest (both hosted by PTO), and our West Community Day of Service on January 19th led by our Parent Lighthouse Team. Our LSC meeting meets on January 22nd at 8:00am and we look forward to learning from Katye Carlson, Director of Teaching and Learning, and Amy Bartlett, Associate Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. If you’d like to participate in any of the above opportunities, please see specific details below. The School Climate Survey is still open for families—your perspective makes us better! Links are included below.
January kicks off our focus on Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. As Stephen Covey reminds us:
“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”
Let’s commit to truly listening—so we can understand—before we ask to be understood. Here’s to a year of understanding, collaboration, and growth—together we lead, together we rise!

Our PLT (Parent Lighthouse Team) serves to build the bridge between school and home to bring the 8 Habits to families. Through collaboration, education, and leaeership they aim to build a strong community of confident, joyful learners and compassionate leaders. They have been instrumental in helping us partner with other Leader In Me schools who need warm clothes putting our lost & found items to good use. They are currenlty leading the efforts to create a VCE Habit Garden in the front of our school. You may notice some new rocks and a large pallet of stones - all part of the bigger plan to beautify our space with the 8 Habits and the framework we embody to create and sustain a community igniting the joy of learning and inspiring leaders. If you would like to volunteer your time or resources to help this initiative, please reach out to Ashley Johnson at aejohnson@forsyth.k12.ga.us for more information. Stay Tuned!
