10 Steps for Finding a Job
Finding a job can be a challenging task. However, job hunting is a process, and like any process, there are steps you can take to make it easier.
Decide what qualities you want in a career, such as the hours you want to work and the responsibilities you want to have. What is your passion? Can it be included in your job? You may use a website like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to search for different jobs. The link is provided later in this lesson.
Determine in which areas you are willing to compromise, such as working weekends or late hours.
Search for jobs in your desired field online, at job fairs, and by networking, which means making contact with people in order to exchange knowledge and build professional or social connections.
Make a list of the specific jobs you want to pursue, with contact information for each of the businesses.
Gather the information required to develop the paperwork you'll need to apply for jobs, such as an application, a résumé, a list of references, a cover letter, and a portfolio. You will learn how to develop these documents in the upcoming lessons of this module.
Research the businesses where you are applying. This will help you during the interview process.
Contact the businesses where you are applying, either by sending the application electronically or dropping off the application in person. Dress and act professionally while interacting with the other employees or manager.
Schedule interviews as the employers contact you. Read about and practice the interview tips in module 6.05 to feel more prepared and reduce anxiety about the interview.
Practice your answers and own the interview! Answer their questions thoroughly and confidently with specific examples that show hard work and personal growth.
Send a thank you note to the employer after the interview. Thank them for taking the time to speak with you and considering you for the position.
