This course is offered to students who have gaps in some of the skills necessary to be successful literacy students. Rather than progressing in a linear manner, the skills are returned to for practice in more complex texts throughout the school year, which is why each unit stretches across the school year. Instructors may choose to focus on a particular skill each day across a week: decoding lesson on Mondays, fluency on Tuesdays, etc. Alternately, they may choose to integrate skills from each unit across a week. As students will come to the course at various skill levels, some students may be focused on just some of the unit skills: eg.- a student may be proficient in decoding and fluency but may need additional instruction in building vocabulary and comprehension. Some material and texts will be unique to this course but, texts, vocabulary, and materials will also be used from the students' literacy coursework. The course will be individualized to meet student needs through a mix of whole group, small group and individual instruction.
