Timeline for Identification
Students going into grades 1-7 will be identified for gifted education in the spring of their current school year with the intention of entering the program in the beginning of the next school year. All students are eligible to be recommended for the program.
Current Kindergarten: In order to start working with kindergarten students early, all children will receive Gifted Education instruction as a push-in model in each classroom. The Gifted Education Teacher will visit each classroom on a rotating schedule to provide whole group and small group lessons.
Rising 1st - 7th Graders: Based upon assessment data and anecdotal observations, teachers will complete recommendation forms in February for students they feel may be eligible.
In March, parents will be notified if their child was recommended. Parents of students who are not recommended, will have three weeks to file an appeal. Students who are recommended, or students whose appeals are granted, will then take the appropriate norm-referenced assessments prior to the end of the current school year to determine eligibility for the program. Parents will then be notified in August/September whether or not their child has been accepted into the program.
*Any student recommended and found eligible for the program does not have to be reassessed annually. They will continue in the Gifted Education Program for the duration of their time in Fair Haven or it is determined by all stakeholders that the placement is not appropriate for the student at a given time.
