WEEK of 1/27-31
Monday - Apprentice students will receive checklists for next projects and be assigned to groups with mentors. Mentors will review the checklists with the apprentices and give them a tour of the area and equipment they will be using.
Tuesday - Apprentices will begin tasks on their checklists under the guidance of their mentors.
Wednesday - continuation of Tuesday
Thursday - The class will revisit project logs, their importance and expectations.
Friday - continuation of Wednesday
(Monday 2/3, all students will resume project logs)
WEEK of 1/21 - 24
Monday - NO SCHOOL - MLK Day
This week is dedicated to disassembling robots and attachments and reorganizing kits. We will not be able to begin any new projects until the equipment is properly stored.
I will be meeting with mentors to establish their roles and responsibilities.
WEEK of 1/13-17
Monday, we will continue with round 2.
Tuesday, hopefully we will finish round 3
Wed - Fri
We will need to break down all attachments and robots and get all kits reorganized, so we can put them away before we start ANYHTING else! So, let's focus on that so we can move forward.
When everything is put away, I can regroup people into their new project groups, give them their checklists for their beginning tasks, and get the new projects started.
Friday 1/17
Today, we will finish the debrief we began yesterday, then students will begin reorganizing their kits and disassembling any attachments as follows:
Remove ALL parts from your kit that are not yours.
Put them in the organizing trays on the challenge board.
Organize EXISTING parts in your kit that do belong to you.
ONLY after steps one and two are complete!! -- go shopping for missing parts on the challenge board.
I will be calling up students to discuss next steps.
WEEK of 1/7-10
Welcome Back!!
Our agreement was that we would spend Tuesday and Wednesday preparing for robot rounds that will be on Thursday and Friday.
As always, I can be flexible on this, but that means everything else is delayed. If we are to stick to this schedule, everyone needs to get directly to work with their team.
Remember:
Only ONE bot is used at the table, so all updated programs must be downloaded to ONE bot.
You MAY NOT play programs from your ipad, they must be played from the bot.
Only two drivers per launch area.
Make sure you have practiced any attachment changes so that you can reduce time lost for swapping out attachments.
Teams will be called AT RANDOM, so all teams must be prepared to do their first round on Thursday morning. I will rotate through all teams first before doing second rounds UNLESS a team wants to do their second round directly after their first.
Make sure everyone knows how to run the programs, as you know, sometimes students are absent, so you NEED A BACKUP PLAN in case you have anyone absent.
WEEK of 12/16-20
Presentations
WEEK of 12/9-13
YOU decide your goals for the day and week.
YOU decide who is doing what.
COMMUNICATE with your team. Make sure everyone knows what is going on. If you are absent and do not send your team a message in Google Classroom to explain your absence YOU WILL LOSE POINTS!
Calendar Change:
Tentative plan moving ahead: You will have this week to work.
We will have presentations next week.
When we return from the holiday break, teams will have a couple of days to prepare, then we will do the robot matches.
WEEK of 12/2-6
YOU decide your goals for the day and week.
YOU decide who is doing what.
COMMUNICATE with your team. Make sure everyone knows what is going on. If you are absent and do not send your team a message in Google Classroom to explain your absence YOU WILL LOSE POINTS!
WEEK of 11/18 - 22
Last week, you hoped to finish your Problem Statement sheet.
Many of you did not.
Here is where the rubber meets the road:
Your team needs to figure out how they are going to complete your innovation project and do your final robot matches according to the schedule.
Things to consider:
Days you cannot work or will have limited work:
11/22 half day, Grade Six Olympics (WEB)
11/9-12 You will be either presenting, or listening to presentations.
As soon as you have completed the research you need as well as the plan for your innovation, you will receive a slide template from me. DO NOT begin designing slides until I have shared the template with you.
YOU decide your goals for the day and week.
YOU decide who is doing what.
COMMUNICATE with your team. Make sure everyone knows what is going on. If you are absent and do not send your team a message in Google Classroom to explain your absence YOU WILL LOSE POINTS!
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY 11/14-15
GENERAL Goal: Complete Problem statement TAB in your spreadsheet. Make sure everyone on your team understands and agrees with the problem statement.
WEDNESDAY 11/13
Goal: Complete Problem statement. Make sure everyone on your team understands and agrees with the problem statement.
Identify the problem.
Briefly explain or describe why it is a problem.
Describe the shortcomings of current solutions.
State what aspect of the problem you intend to improve upon.
MONDAY - VETERANS DAY
TUESDAY 11/12/24
Goals for the week:
Complete the Problem Statement sheet
If you have other goals you feel you can and should complete this week, you need to add them. However, your main focus should be the Problem Statement Sheet
Daily Goals:
TUESDAY - Be able to explain how to use the Problem Statement sheet
Wednesday and Thursday - You decide
FRIDAY: Your Problem Statement Sheet (in your team spreadsheet) will be due.
It is okay to get it done sooner, but you want to make sure that you have a quality product. It is up to the team to determine how they want to
SOLVED!! How to open shared files. Make sure youir file name does NOT have a space between the name and the file extension. The file extension must be .llsp3 The first two letters are lowercase "L"
MONDAY 11/4 - Friday 11/8
Goals for this week:
Share organizer information with team.
Load ALL programs on to one bot in order to be executed
Practice robot rounds with team.
Monday: Meet with team and share the information you have gathered regarding your "existing solution". Based on whatyou know now, as a team, discuss what you would like to try to develop as an innovation.
Tuesday: Plan with your team how you will run your 3 minute robot round.
Wednesday: Have ALL programs on one bot by the end of the period.
Thursday: Practice timed rounds with your team on the challenge board.
Friday: Timed practice rounds on the challenge board with Ms. Vogel. Record notes on what to improve.
Thursday/Friday 10/26, 10/27
Complete the organizer for your "solution" research. You should have received an organizer either on paper or in Google Classroom. By completing all the items in the organizer, you should have the information you need to be an expert on your existing solution.
TUESDAY 10/25/24 and WEDENSDAY 10/26/24
Continue with your mission-related goals.
MONDAY 10/28/24
Receive a calendar to keep in your folder.
This week you will have Monday-Wed to work on your missions. On Thursday and Friday you will be completing an organizer of your assigned "solution" for your team.
Goals for the week:
create your own mission-related goal for Mon-Wed
"Complete 'solution' organizer using my research information.
Create your SMART goal for the day and use your time efficiently.
FRIDAY 10/25/24
Project Logs due today.
You are making a mission related SMART goal today.
For easier pathway planning, go to my website, then:
> Advanced STEM-Robotics
>FLL Robotics Spike Prime
> Spike Prime Programming Resources
> Measuring Distances with Hub Connection
Also, not the stack for a easy 90 degree turn.
THURSDAY 10/24/24
Today, you will get a participation grade. Full credit if:
At any given time, you can tell me your task and your goal (how far you expect to get with that task).
AND
What any other person on your team is doing that day.
Today is a mission-focused goal. You will be working on your challenge board missions.
WEDNESDAY 10/23/24
Today, you will continue your work from yesterday. Your overall goal is to become an EXPERT on your topic by being able to answer the guiding questions.
You will need to write your goal based on previous progress.
Example: Find and record details about why my solution does not work, such as physical, financial or social barriers.
Below are items from the guiding questions. You can use them to help guide yor research.
Who benefits from the problem remaining a problem?
Follow the money - what cost barriers exist to a solution?
Follow the science - what practical factors are barriers to a solution?
Who cares about the problem and why?
Who doesn’t care about the problem and why?
Keep asking questions., and finding answers.
TUESDAY 10/22/24
Refer to your goals for the week.
IF your team has already narrowed the focus of your research problem, then you should be working (as a team) to become EXPERTS on that narrowed topic.
This means that you should EACH have been assigned (by your team) existing solutions to research.
To help with this, I SUGGEST getting together with your team and googling the following:
"[your topic] impact prevention strategies". (See below)
The Google AI response will give you a lot of existing solutions to begin learning about.
However, remember that AI is not perfect and will not give you ALL the information you need. It is merely a STARTING POINT. It's a really good starting point, but it is just a starting point.
Once you have done this as a team, assign each team member an existing solution to research. Then, split up and find out as much as you can to answer "Research Guiding Questions" - click to link to them.
Oil spill impact prevention strategies
Ghost fishing impact prevention strategies
Ocean mining impact prevention strategies
Coral bleaching impact prevention strategies
Ocean dead zone impact prevention strategies
Ocean noise impact prevention strategies
Now that you know what you should be doing, write your goal for the DAY and then do it.
Example SMART goal for today: Get my assigned topic from my team, find information so I can describe the existing solution and why it isn't entirely working.
MONDAY 10/21/24
This week, you will need initials.
You will make your goal based on MTW researching and TF missions:
Goals for the week:
Identify the narrow aspect of your overall problem for which your team will innovate.
Become an expert on the problem by being able to answer the Research Guiding questions.
Complete mission…. describe the point at which you would like to move forward with your work on missions
Goal for Monday:
As a team, identify the focus of our innovation.
Have team delegate items to research
Find information for… (The following are examples. You will need to write your own goal.)
one existing cause and why it still fails
who makes money from this problem
what makes solution (x) so hard to do
Research Guiding Questions:
Make yourself an EXPERT on the problem you are trying to solve.
Be able to define and describe the problem in detail.
Know all the known causes of the problem.
Know all the previous and current (attempts at) solutions to the problem.
Know WHY the previous solutions failed.
Know WHY the current solutions are not doing enough.
Do this by asking smart questions.
Who benefits from the problem remaining a problem?
Follow the money - what cost barriers exist to a solution?
Follow the science - what practical factors are barriers to a solution?
Who cares about the problem and why?
Who doesn’t care about the problem and why?
Keep asking questions.
TUESDAY 10/15 - FRIDAY 10/18
For the remainder of this week, you will be working with your team to complete challenge board missions in preparation for your robot tournament rounds. Keep in mind the following:
Name your programs sensibly so that they can be easily found by anyone.
Keep your programs organized so that your team can find them even if you are not here.
Group some missions together to save time.
If you will need to change attachments between missions, that will take time.
It's a good idea to have attachments that are versatile and will work for many different missions, but that does take a lot of planning.
You can always do some Google searching and YouTubing to see what others have come up with for this year's FLL Submersible challenge board.
FRIDAY - You will receive instructions regarding how to share programs using Google Drive. Please save all programs with a name and date, and share all programs to the shared folder so that everyone on the team can access them even when someone is absent.
MONDAY 10/14/24
Today, I will show you how to use the Innovation Research Spreadsheet. Your point person will share it with you with editing rights. You will need to claim one of the tabs on the spreadsheet and put your name on it. If you have time, add some of your articles to your sheet/tab.
For you goals for the week:
You have one day dedicated to learning to use the spreadsheet. The remaining four days are for the challenge board, so you will have to create your goals accordingly, considering how much time you have.
Be SPECIFIC - what exactly do you want to COMPLETE today?
Make it MEASUREABLE - Be sure that it is possible to tell whether or not you finished what you set out to do.
WEDNESDAY 10/09/24
Teams should be sharing what they have found so that the team can NARROW the focus of their project. You will NOT be able to solve the enormous problems that you have identified. Instead, you will need to :
Learn about the different aspects of the topic:
a. different problems within the topic
b. different causes of the problem
c. different impacts of the problem
Choose ONE SMALLER subtopic within the overall topic on which to focus.
Once that is chosen, then we again divide the work. Different team members will research different things such as:
a. different reasons the thing happens
b. different impacts of the thing happening
c. different things that are already being done to mitigate the thing
d. different motivations for people involved in the thing (money, power, ignorance, laziness, greed...)
e. etc.
To write your SMART goals for today, answer this question:
What EXACTLY do I want to get done today? -- Not what do I want to do..., but what do I want to GET DONE.
So, consider the list above, what SPECIFIC THING do you want to get done that will help your team achieve find the information on the list?
TUESDAY 10/08/24
If a topic has been decided, the next step is for students to do independent research on the topic. The goal of this phase of research is to find out all the problems that exist that are associated with their topic. The purpose of this is for the team to be able to decide what problem to try to solve or mitigate.
MONDAY 10/07/24
First project logs will be returned. I will meet with some individuals to discuss adjustments to logs to improve the quality.
Teams will meet and share their pitch slides. Teams will then discuss what topic they would like to do for their research/innovation project. If a topic is not decided upon, the team needs to at least have chosen a mEthod for making the decision.
FRIDAY 10/02/24
Discuss with your team how to delegate the challenges.
Create a rough plan and record it on your team sheet.
THURSDAY 10/03/24
Familiarize yourself with all challenge board missions.
Use your resources: rule books, videos, the challenge board itself.
WEDENSDAY 10/02/24
Challenge board should be completed today.
Individuals: Know what is required of each mission.
TUESDAY 10/01/24
Continue building challenge board.
If finished, explore models and begin thinking of strategies for solving challenges.
MONDAY 9/30/24
Review goals from Friday for Project logs.
Begin building challenge board models.
Complete project log entry for the day

i have been provided names of point people for all teams except for two. I will need those today.
TUESDAY 9/24/24
CONTINUE
Discuss with your team:
Final robot driving base
Mission planning - how will you decide who does what missions
Point person - choose someone
You may or may not have all these things determined by the end of the day, but I WILL be asking about them and I WILL expect that they have been discussed.
MONDAY 9/23/24
Discuss with your team:
Final robot driving base
Mission planning - how will you decide who does what missions
Point person - choose someone
You may or may not have all these things determined by the end of the day, but I WILL be asking about them and I WILL expect that they have been discussed.
FRIDAY 9/20/24

Discuss possible modifications to the wheels if necessary.
Continue to the tutorial "My Code, Our Program"
Teams will receive a team grade based on:
Everyone on the team has a role, knows their role, and knows how it fits in with the team as a whole.
Everyone is actively engaged in moving the team forward toward its goals.
TUESDAY 9/17/24
Teams will continue the task from yesterday.
Teams will receive a team grade based on:
Knowing all team member names.
Knowing what YOUR individual task is.
Knowing how your task fits into the team goal, and what comes next after you are finished with the immediate task at hand.
MONDAY 9/16/24
We discussed options for re-submitting pitches since many slide decks were missing a lot of the required items.
New groups formed based on answers from Google Classroom questions from Friday. This entailed new partner assignments and new robot number assignments.
Students joined their new group. The group goal is to build the Advanced Driving Base in the Spike Prime Tutorial. There are four parts: Front, Back and 2 sides. The purposes of the activity are as follows:
Become acquainted with your new group.
Learn to work together with your new group.
Explore new build options that will also require modifications and thus consensus building within the team.
** A point person should begin to emerge from your team**
FRIDAY 9/13/24
Share pitch with team/group
Answer Google Classroom questions regarding your topic preferences
THURSDAY 9/12/24
Finish pitch
WEDNESDAY 9/11/24
Continue working on pitch for problem topic.
Tuesday 9/10/24 - 8th grade field trip
Take all lists and narrow down:
Rank your top three topics
Take your highest ranking topic and create a “pitch”
Be concise. State your topic as specifically and clearly as you can, and what is the cause of the problem.
Tell why it is important -
Whom or what is directly affected by this problem - and in what way?
Whom or what is indirectly affected by this problem - and in what way? (ripple effect)
How big of a problem is it? It is a good idea to have some numbers or facts to illustrate its importance.
Make it interesting. Include some details that are fun or weird.
Create pitch slides using the template in Google Classroom
If you finish early, make a pitch for your second and third choice. You don’t necessarily have to make more slides, but DO be prepared to pitch your second choice if your first one flops with your teammates.
MONDAY 9/9/24
This year’s theme is “Submerged” - having to do with exploring the layers of the ocean.
We will first explore a few topics together.
Visualizing Deep-sea Mining 2:18
Shockwaves of the Submarine Volcano in Tonga 3:14
Massive underwater eruption may preview deep-sea mining destruction
Exploring the Deep with the DAP Lander | Nautilus Live 3:36
NAUTILUS LIVE 2014 | Shipwreck Encounters 5:37
You will now get into groups and share ideas from your paper.
Take turns sharing ONE item off your list.
what was the topic
what thing or things did you find most interesting about it
what other things do you remember about it that you did not write down
what are you now curious about?
Continue taking turns until all topics have been shared.
ADD the topics of others in your group to YOUR list. You don’t need to write a lot, just write the topic and enough information that you could reasonably talk about it if asked.
Join another group to create a group of six. There will be one group of five.
Take turns sharing all your information.
Whenever someone shares new information, ADD that to your list.
Keep this list in your folder.
FRIDAY 9/6/24
Continue working on tutorials. Do not go beyond “Training Camp 3”. If you have successfully completed training camp three, let me know and show me what you have so far AND how you named the programs.
If you and your partner are finished with Training Camp 3, you will split and join a\nother partnership and mentor them through the completion of whatever task they are working on.
THURSDAY 9/5/24
Continue with tutorials that were begun on Tuesday
TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY 9/3/24 AND 9/4/24
You now have a partner. You will be assigned a robot kit with your partner.
You are responsible for this kit. You are not sharing it with anyone. Take good care of it.
The first task you will need to do with your kit is to build your base build robot that you and your partner will use to learn some basic programming. If you already have programming experience and your partner does not, have your partner program while YOU SUPERVISE.
If you forgot your workstation number, you can find BOTH your workstation number and your bot number in Google Classroom.
You will receive your kits today. When you return them, you will need to stack them neatly on the table back where you got them. Obviously, this is not where we will continue to keep them. I will explain that when I return.
Once you get your bot and arrive at your workstation with your partner, one of you will log into the computer. Follow the steps below to build your bot:
HOW TO BUILD THE BASE BUILD
Open the Spike Prime app on the computer.
Choose Spike Prime (on the right)
Click on "Unit Plans" (down and to the left)
Find the Unit Plan called "Competition Ready" and download it.
Click "Start" on the first item : Training Camp 1: Driving Around
On the screen, to the right, you will see a panel that has tutorial slides. Each slide has a blue arrow pointing to the right that will take you to the next slide. Skip to Slide 02/06
Click on "BUILD".
This is your base build. It is VERY simple. You do not need to use this base build for your team, but your team WILL need to decide on a base build so that ALL the team's robots have the exact same base build.
As you are working WRITE DOWN any questions you have about anything, so you will remember to ask me when I get back.
If you do not finish building, put the partially built bot back in the kit. You will probably want to note down which number step you left off on.
If you do finish building, start working on the rest of the tutorial and try out some programming.
Remain at your workstation.
FRIDAY 8/30/24
Students will be assigned a partner and a workstation
Take turns sharing ONE item off your list.
what was the topic
what thing or things did you find most interesting about it
what other things do you remember about it that you did not write down
what are you now curious about?
Continue taking turns until all topics have been shared.
ADD the topics of others in your group to YOUR list. You don’t need to write a lot, just write the topic and enough information that you could reasonably talk about it if asked.
Whenever your partner shares new information, ADD that to your list.
Keep this list in your folder.

Title: Web Exploration List
As you work, create a list of topics - do NOT spend more than 4 minutes reading about any one topic. When the timer goes off, write down the topic you are on and the most interesting things about it, then find a new topic.
